ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – After being removed from his post as President of the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) just over a year ago, indigenous Virgin Islander Dr Karl Dawson has now been selected to the prestige position as President of the Anguilla Community College (ACC).

This is according to a press release issued by the Anguilla Community College today Wednesday August 9, 2017.

Dr Dawson was selected by the Board of Governors of the Anguilla Community College after a lengthy search process. As per the College Act, the Board’s recommendation has met the approval of the Anguilla Minister of Education, Hon Cora Richardson-Hodge.

In an exclusive interview with our newsroom, Dr Dawson said, "I count it as a tremendous privilege to be selected to serve as President of the Anguilla Community College and help to advance that community because I really believe that education is the key to the development of a society.

Dr Dawson said the decision to take up the post was a tough one because of the strong ties he has with his homeland including his family, church and political service. However, he added that "at this stage I think I have something to contribute to education ... and I will pursue the opporutunity to help the Anguilla Community College move forward".

Dr Dawson was a casuality of political victimisation

Dr Dawson, who is expected to take up his new job on August 28, 2017, was replaced at HLSCC by Board Member and consultant Dr Janet B. Smith in August 2016.

Following Dr Dawson’s removal in 2016, sources close to the situation had told our newsroom that some in the political and academic class, including the controversial Minister for Education and Culture, Honourable Myron V. Walwyn (AL) and some Board Members, allegedly wanted him gone as soon as possible.

Many have claimed that Dr Dawson was a casuality of political victimisation, having run for political office and opposed the current government.

Educational Achievements and Contributions

Dr Dawson’s tenure at the HLSCC was for seven years as president from 2009 to 2016. He earned degrees from the University of the West Indies in hotel management, Wright State University (USA) in education and doctoral degree from University of Florida in higher education administration. His doctoral dissertation was entitled Organizational Learning in a Community College.

Among Dr Dawson’s many post and accomplishments at HLSCC are, he served as vice president, dean, head of academic department and faculty member in addition to his final role. While serving as President, the College was accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education in the USA, a process he indicated that was challenging for the entire organization but also very rewarding. Dr Dawson is also active in the higher education sector in the region and beyond. He is the current president of the Association of Caribbean Tertiary Institutions (ACTI), headquartered in Barbados.

Proud of you Doc. Some suggestions...include online courses and programmes for the near future to capture those persons who may not want to travel...Do not rule out collaboration with other schools in the USA, Caribbean, UVI in St. Thomas, and with our own HLSCC...Even consider a one semester programme where the credits are transferrable between Anguilla and BVI or a student exchange within the region or internationally...that will build the already close ties between the territories...

Congrats Dr. Dawson. It's a shame and sad when one has to leave their home country to pursue opportunities elsewhere, but sometimes you have to do what you have to do given the road ahead.

This decision was probably not an easy one for Dr. Dawson, but he will be fine once he get settled in.

This move should speak to all those who may find limited opportunities to advance their careers here in the BVI: The BVI is a small country with limited opportunities in many areas.

Don't be afraid to think outside the box or your comfort zone. The world is filled with opportunities. You just have to be open them.

Again, Congrats Dr. Dawson. God speed.

Congratulation Dr. Dawson on your new achievement. What God has in store for you no man can stop it. He said that his thoughts towards you is not evil but good to give a beautiful end. God take down and he put up. Nobody could not touch you unless the good Lord allowed it for this move. He sees that your heart is like Paul the Apostle but you was among the vipers who only wants to secured a position for their own kind. May God go with you and whatever you set your hands to be prosperous. Blessing all the way.

All that glitters is not gold. Dr.Dawson, you always had the interest of outsiders at heart.and never looked out for the native islanders except when you wanted a vote. He was not ousted, he ousted himself.
Tell it like it is bro.

Carl, believe it our not. you are still actually at home in Anguilla. People tend to ignore or forget the strong ancestral ties we as Virgin Islanders have with other Caribbean countries, especially Anguilla, St. Kitts, Antigua, and the USVI. And these days, the ties have expanded even further to include many other Caribbean countries.

I would think that Anguilla' s standards and BOB's are vastly different. Yale vs Schnook University for instance.Jordans vs Mike. Leather vs Pleather. Did Anguilla settle?. Dawson settle? Salary comparison
A step or a step down for Mr Dawson? How does it look on his future resume?
I say congratulations to Mr Dawson and give good wishes. He is a good guy. However, I hesitate to throw shade at the BVI choice of education leader at the college.

Anguilla's gain is the BVI's loss! I an saddened by this outcome! I am am a BVI Belonger with intense ties to the BVI. Karl Dawson is an excellent man and an excellent administration, and simply a wonderful communicator! He created initiatives for Stoutt students, faculty and staff with Syracuse University, one of the most prestigious educational institutions in the USA for the benefit for BVI Landers, and if given the opportunity, he could have created the opportunity to created similar initiatives with other prestigious USA educational institutions. I know this for fact, in that I worked with Dr. Dawson, my cousin on these! Politics has again shown its ugly dysfunctional nature! I am one percent that Dr. Dawson will be a success in Anguilla and a loss for The BVI. I stand with other BVI Landers and Belongers to assist Dr. Dawson, in what every way possible!

It's a pity that you had to leave your homeland like this because of some small minded individuals but I am super happy for you...as a past student, you were a great lecturer and these Virgin Islands are at a loss not to have you as an educator here.

Let us stop the political bashing as it does not add to the conversation. I want to say again Doc, congratulations. I forgot to mention earlier that you need to encourage a conversation from an economic point of view through debates and presentations that in order for all Anguillians to continue developing and maintaining a high living of standard of living is to study the basics of economics - buying and selling in a country. The low population and the buying patterns of its residents and citizens will not be able to maintain or sustain the present economy, thus, there will be a high rate of brain drain people leaving for greener pastures). As I understand it, the present population is only 16K, 2 of 4 banks in receivership, and several hotels and villas closed down. Controlled immigration is the key and Anguillians cannot build it alone. If extreme and restricted immigration policies continue, with very little concessions, I foresee heavy reliance on HMG to direct and maintain the government and the economy. I am not saying to be lenient forever, but give concessions for brief periods to increase population numbers over the next 5 years, otherwise, Anugillians will definitely lose its control forever. Do not let Honourable Webster and others valiant contributions to development be lost forever.
