LONDON, UK- A backbench United Kingdom (UK) Member of Parliament (MP), who has advocated for UK citizens living and working in Overseas Territories (OTs) to have voting rights there, was on Monday, July 18, 2022, eliminated from the race for a new Prime Minister of the UK.

Thomas G.J. Tugendhat was eliminated after receiving 31 votes, down one from his performance in the second round last Thursday.

Conservative MPs are now voting in the latest ballot to decide the two leadership candidates to be put to a vote of members.

One of the four remaining contenders - Rishi Sunak, Penelope M. Mordaunt, Mary Elizabeth Truss, and Olukemi Olufunto Badenoch - will be eliminated after today's vote.

The vote to decide the final two contenders is scheduled to then take place on Wednesday, July 20, 2022.

Mr Sunak looks almost certain to make the final two, with the other three candidates vying for second place.

Tory party members will then pick the winner after a summer of campaigning by the two final contenders, with a result announced on September 5, 2022.

Who is Thomas G.J. Tugendhat?

Mr Tugendhat was the chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee that wrote the recent report "Resetting the Relationship."

Recommendation 9 of the report states: "The UK Government should initiate a consultation with the elected governments of the OTs and work with them to agree a plan to ensure that there is a pathway for all resident UK and British Overseas Territory citizens to be able to vote and hold elected office in territory."

This is interpreted to mean that a UK citizen on a work permit in the [British] Virgin Islands would be able to vote, and run for office, in the territory.

Mr Tugendhat had put his military past at the centre of his campaign for the UK Prime Minister’s post but was eliminated, leaving the 31 votes of his supporters up for grabs.

A new PM is being sought following the resignation of disgraced Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson, who was forced out by his own party members.

Because even though the laws that dictate which US citizen can vote and how they can vote is still grounded in racism, the US at the end of the day does a better job at ensuring their territories understand they are American. The single constitution of the US unifies Americans no matter if they were born on the mainland or in a territory or on a base.

The UK on the other hand, very much likes that their OT citizens are apart from them and only pay lip service to them. The UK only finds time to acknowledge their OTs when it's convenient to them and even then they are bias towards some and against others. British citizens always complain about their status when they go to OTs but they never ask about OT citizens in the UK and how hard they had to fight to even be considered British and in some ways it's just in name only.

Good for him, God does not like ugly! I wonder if that is the reason they have so much interest in the belongership matter. Not only would they work and hold political office, they will also start their own businesses and hire their own people, and send their money out of the local economy. Because he is no longer in the race means we forget this exist. It’s on the back burner, but still on the stove. Be vigilant BVI! Let’s keep praying.
