ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - During its upcoming Athletes Awards Recognition Gala on December 28, 2011, at Drakes Point at Fort Burt, the BVI Athletics Association will present two Lifetime Achievement Awards to Rose Phillips King-Adams and Theda Bucknor-Forbes, who have contributed a combined 37 years of service to the Association.

King-Adams was the territory’s leading female athlete in the 1970s and at one time held the 100, 200, 400m and Long Jump National Records. She was on the territory’s first CAC Championships team—finishing seventh in the Long Jump-- IAAF World Championships and Carifta Games teams. After her career, she served as Association Secretary through 2002.

Bucknor-Forbes, who was involved in the association between 1971 and 1981 serving in different capacities, was a part of the first Carifta Games team in 1976.

Last year, during the Association’s 40th anniversary, Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented to all the Presidents who guided the Association between 1970 and 2008.

During the event, the Association will hand out numerous awards in eight categories, recognizing athletes and coaches who have served a minimum of five years.

Hotly contested will be the Sol BVI 2011 Youth, Junior and Senior Athletes of the Year in male and female divisions. Sol will also recognize athletes who have broken National Records during the indoor and outdoor seasons.

Colonial Insurance will be handing out the Comeback Athlete of the Year award, which recognizes an athlete who has been injured, returns to make a national team and meets the criteria established. Since January 2010, Colonial Insurance has been supporting the association’s athletes’ rehabilitation program, which assists athletes in getting treatment from injuries. They will also present the Junior and Sr. Division awards while Premier Dental will recognize the Youth Division awards recipients.

While in some categories the choices are obvious in the most outstanding categories where the bulk of the hardware will be given out, some divisions were extremely close.

Awards will also be given to the most improved male and female athletes of the year. Coaches who have served a minimum of five years will also be recognized.

The Guest speaker for the event will be IAAF Regional Development Centre Director, Lenford G. Levy.

Girl Rose I remember those days when you were untouchable. I can still see those long legs of yours leaving your competition in the dust. Congratulations.
