ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI– The British Virgin Islands Athletics Association (BVIAA) has announced a 30-athlete team for the 50th edition of the CARIFTA Games slated for early next month in Nassau, The Bahamas.

During a brief press conference held Sunday, March 26, 2023, at Village Cay Conference Room, President of the BVI Athletic Association, Steve Augustine, introduced the 30 athletes and offered words of encouragement as he noted he is excited to have a large delegation.

All eyes on Hodge

Notably listed in the team is teenage sprint sensation and World U18 and U20 Indoor Record Holder in the 200m, Adaejah T. Hodge, who was a triple gold medalist in the 49th edition of the games held in Jamaica in 2022.

The 17-year-old Hodge will be competing in the Girls U20 category. It is unclear whether she will attempt the three events as last year- Long Jump, 100m and 200m.

Hodge was the winner of the Austin Sealy Trophy for the most outstanding athlete of the 49th CARIFTA Games and her exploits helped the [British] Virgin Islands to finish third on the medals table, behind Jamaica and The Bahamas, with 4 gold medals, 2 silver and 1 bronze for a total of 7 medals.

No doubt, the Region and the rest of the world will be following Hodge throughout the Games.

those other 29 have a local coach and local training. Its their chance to show what a real BVIslander can do. They did not have the exposure the Hodge girl have as she is living in the US and have better facilities and couch there to do training. So give them a chance please if all of them had US training they would take all the gold at the games.

That has nothing to do with the question. A list was provided without the events attached to the athletes' names. The question has nothing to do with Adaejah.

They have age group mentioned there so those others will participate in their age group events which is race for that group and relay. Ms. Hodge age group have relay race to be ran too.

I am just wondering when Ms. Hodge reach Olympic age which country will she represent?

The answer to that is not rocket science. She will represent the country who foots the dam bill. We have money to give fishermen without boats $20,000 and when this young lady won all those gold medals last Carifta, she got a fruit basket. Hon. De Castro should have been ashamed to deliver that. I am not in any way affiliated with any of the athletes, but I absolutely love athletics and the athletes work hard and proper daily conditioning as well as traveling to meets for this young lady and McMaster, etc takes money, lots of money. The country that they are the flag-bearer of should assist in those expenses. Instead we are busy giving away free money and singing it is in your pockets while on the rostrum. No shame. We need to prioritize when spending public funds.

But I digress. Athletes, each and every one of you has earned your place at the starting line. Go conquer. Go and throw down and break down and run and jump as fast and as high as you can. We are proud and looking forward to welcoming you back home with all your medals shining around your necks.
