ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Acting Premier of the Virgin Islands, Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has called for ‘Due Process’ for US detained Premier Andrew A. Fahie (R1) and Managing Director of the BVI Ports Authority (BVIPA), Mrs Oleanvine Pickering-Maynard.

The Premier was detained today, April 28, 2022, by the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) in Miami on charges related to conspiracy to import a controlled substance and money laundering, according to Governor John J. Rankin, CMG.

Dr Wheatley in an address tonight, April 28, 2022, also confirmed the detainment of Pickering-Maynard and the Premier and said the charges are still alleged.

“I nor the other ministers of Government have spoken with Premier Fahie or Mrs Maynard, however, we call for them to be afforded due process in the US courts of law,” Dr Wheatley added.

As previously announced, Dr Wheatley said he has met with the Governor who alerted him of today’s developments.

“Cabinet as a body met earlier this evening, where we discussed the situation. I will also discuss the current circumstances with UK Minister for the Overseas Territories, the Rt Hon Amanda M. Milling MP tomorrow morning, along with the Governor and the Attorney General.”

No comments on arrest - Dr The Hon Wheatley

Dr Wheatley said while he cannot comment further on the arrest since it is an active investigation, he said the CoI report will be published sooner given the new development; however, he maintained that the Report is not connected to the detainment.

Later this afternoon, Foreign Secretary Liz M. Truss had said that the arrest of Premier Fahie (R1) has shown the importance of the UK-sponsored Commission of Inquiry (CoI) in the territory, despite the Governor saying the two were not connected.

Dr the Hon Wheatley urged the public to read the report with an objective eye and not in the context of the recent arrest, with the aim of strengthening systems of Government under a democratic framework as opposed to draconian measures that would set the VI back.

Dr Wheatley maintained that the VI remains committed to good governance and promised to bring further updates in his capacity as acting Premier.

The NDP made a statement some days ago saying that they are going to Unseat the Fahie Government. I hope the NDP and those other Opposition Members did had a Hand in this Set Up.

      STOP IT!!!!!!!

Quit blaming people for the faults of others!!!

The FACT remains they are stated in the Affidavit as admitting to being involved in this for YEARS and it was about time they got exposed from dragging our country through the mud and staining its reputation.

If only Fahie just said no to the nice man from the cartel then he wouldnt have been in a position to be set up. Its not rocket science. The question is how much has gone on before that we dont know about

If he were that brazen to do that in the US (I am terrified driving there b/c I am generally terrified of the US police), can you imagine what he has been up to on the ground here in the BVI where he had the power to orchestrate cover and immunity? Thank God for the release from this evil.

Set up? The persons in this matter at least two of them based on their position should have known better. They allegedly behave like fools. You know what has been happening in your country for the last couple of months but yet someone approached and offer you money to push drugs yet you agreed to do so. Why they did not call the Cops? They are criminals that's why. Greedy and selfish. Now they have put a whole nation in mourning. Listen for other things to come. I could hardly sleep. I am still in shock! If what I read is true our leader has been deceiving us a long time.

We don't have time for due process - we should go with a tender waiver.

    Proverbs 28:9-14

9He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law,
Even his prayer shall be abomination.

10Whoso causeth the righteous to go astray in an evil way, He shall fall himself into his own pit:
But the upright shall have good things in possession.

    11The rich man is wise in his own conceit;
But the poor that hath understanding searcheth him out.

12When righteous men do rejoice, there is great glory: But when the wicked rise, a man is hidden.

13He that covereth his sins shall not prosper:
But whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.

Even if this was a "setup" or sting, does that justify the allegations? Did they drug these persons, and forced them into committing these alleged crimes? Did someone force them on a plane and fly them hundreds of miles to conduct an illegal transaction? They had all the time to think and changed their minds. It is obvious from report that they were suspicious at some point but greed above country prevailed.

Perhaps Dr the Mr Wheatley could read the DEA affidavit and comment on the reported admissions of Fahie and Blacka that BVI government and administration have been utterly corrupted from the top down. Lebanese Hezbollah, Sinaloa Cartel ... let Fahie now lead us all in prayer. If Wheatley thinks there is any way the BVI public can rid itself of cancer of corruption and criminality that has taken root other than by immediate Direct Rule, he should say what it is.

If this was not a set up, the Premier & that lady was very lawless & greedy to put themselves in that situation. They’ve been preaching “ no” to drugs & other illegal acts now you’re involved in something like this? Embarrassment to the entire BVI, I feel for my people. Then again, it’s not over till the fat lady sings. Either way it’s wrong, “ set up or greed”

If you see a British navy ship cruising around Tortola soon. No joke, the Premier is in some serious trouble with the FEDS. If he was set up, he bought this on himself. The Premier didn’t have to attend the cruise conference in Miami. Now we are going to understand why. The FEDS in the US had the Premier on their radar ever since the big drug bust in Tortola.

We will soon know the extent of the greed, starting with the visit to court today. The world is watching! Be cautious, considerate and loving to each other, my BVI friends.

I woke up this morning feeling dirty and devastated because I can only imagine what the world is saying about us. I have always strived to live a clean life, work hard, be honest and enjoy the benefits of my hard work. Some of us built out dream houses by taking out mortgages and working 2 jobs if necessary to cover our monthly expenses. Now the COI and the world will paint the BVI people with the corruption brush. Many expatriates can't believe the quality of life we enjoy in the BVI, in fact some have said that those big houses must be from drug money. It hurts, because most people in the BVI are honest hardworking individuals like myself, paying our mortgages and looking forward to a good life in our old age only to be painted with the brush of corruption, dishonesty and drug trafficking. It is indeed a very sad day for all of us in the BVI. God bless the BVI

Is it possible that the fact the Premier was willing to meet these people shows that it was not the first time he had done it? It was bit fishy when the Premier spoke out against the Navy boat in the water looking for people breaking the covid rules and wanting local barges to be used instead. I have seen the indictment in US Southern District of Florida - Dr Wheatley should read it before defending the Premier and the Maynards: Case 1:22- mj-02719-JG

They all need to be investigated as well. This issue of greed and corruption is rampant in all these political parties. Gus started his term with the NDP. His first view of corruption was what he saw after Irma. So every party needs to be investigated. They all hold the same head and serve the same master(s).
