ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - As recorded by Management of the BVI Fishing Complex, absenteeism and tardiness are affecting the overall performance of their staff and their duties, and indicated that it is Management’s job to find the problem of the matter and offer a solution.

In a summary report of 2011, disclosed by the complex, it stated the issue of staff being absent and constantly late for work, is an ongoing and difficult problem.

The report which was laid in the House of Assembly on September 3, 2012, indicated that the major causes for their staff’s poor attendance and punctuality performance are: 1) personal life issues that transfer into the work environment, 2) social illnesses passed from one individual to another, 3) poor eating habits and nutrition, 4) Stress, 5) motivation.

“Absenteeism and tardiness are fundamental issues that are problematic in practice and plagues the BVI Fishing Complex. Absenteeism and tardiness has affected performance in ways that are difficult but not impossible to measure…The issue of absenteeism was dealt with compassion where appropriate and discipline when necessary. As a result, stricter disciplinary measures were imposed using general order and devolution guidelines in an effort to diminish the problem of absenteeism and tardiness.”

Another excerpt from the report read “They [issues] can only be addressed by management through giving advice and consistent counseling through referrals to try and influence each employee to adapt effective social and personal living skills for a better quality of life.”

In efforts to provide a solution, Management of the fishing complex offered training sessions to the staff, to promote vital growth and stability of the organization. “A commitment to developing all of the employees in the organization remains a major focus.”

The majority of the workers at the Fisheries are expats, so I dont want to hear any comments about lazy bvislanders. Fire them and hire people who want to work and stop talking crap bout absenteeism and punctuality. Thank you very much

People are very bias. Now that the force is made up of non-Virgin Islanders, it is another story, not laziness on their part.

There need to be some social worker intervention as these things should not be just thrown under the rug!

There are mostly BVIislanders working there. All the expats working there are naturalized. There is no one on work permit nor contract at the complex

What wey you get your information from no one that work there is naturlized with the exception of two individuals and there are only 4 BVI Landers working there all the other staff which is quite a few have to get a letter from immigration allowing them to stay in the country without paying permits. Find out the truth before you decide to post.

The fault lies with the managers but also the labour code. Workers are entitled to 12 days sick a year, why? Why should people who don't get sick be penalized for turning up to work every day. The holiday entitlement should be extended to 20 days and the sick day joke scrubbed from the labour code. Also tardiness is allowed in the labour code up to 10 minutes late everyday this in itself is a joke. This is why it's hard to fire people who are continually late and strolling about town shopping on a sick day!

This could be any government office. Go to any one of them at starting time. See how many are there, see how many when they get there have breakfast on governmnet time. Don't just pick on the fishermen.

another island joke. 100000 people from the rest of the world would jump at working down there, and bring standards up, yet bvi gonna let the place slide down tubes delivering worst service in caribbean. not because the people are all bad, but because man cant make world class business from a population of 15,000. real simple. the world will move on . other reefs other beaches better respect for the man paying the $
