ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – One resident has questioned the reasoning behind the spending of $99,000 on a recent teachers’ gala dinner while parents are allegedly being asked to assist teachers with school supplies.

The resident expressed her grievances on the Speak Your Mind TV show aired on May 18, 2013.

Stating that she was fed up, a female caller who claimed to be a single-parent of four children, said she earned $1,800 per month and couldn’t understand why she was required to assist with buying supplies for her children’s teachers.

“I want to know, why after I’m done paying my rent and everything else I have going on, I have to help my children’s teacher buy supplies for her classroom?” the caller questioned.

Host, Julio ‘Sam’ Henry, deduced from the caller’s statements that her children attended the Elmore Stoutt High School and she confirmed that this was so. She also stated that they were in second form.

“I want to know how [Education Minister Hon. Myron V. Walwyn] justifies spending $99,000 to sit down and eat and the teachers don’t’ have what they need in their classrooms,” the frustrated caller said.

The caller also stated that while she was in full support of giving teachers their praise, spending $99,000 [on a gala dinner] in these times was not the kind of logic she understood.

“This gala was held in a building that was owned by the government,” the woman asserted, “I don’t understand what happened to this money… If teachers have no supplies to teach children,” she alleged, “how can [the Minister] spend $99,000?”

Hon. Walwyn stated in the House of Assembly on April 30, 2013, that he had no apology for spending some $99,000 on an appreciation dinner and awards ceremony at the Multipurpose Sports Complex on March 16, 2013 that honoured teachers of the Territory.

The woman further alleged that her children's teacher told her that she had not received any assistance from the government to teach students for the past three years.

The caller alleged that her children’s teacher was without printing paper, computer ink, markers and teaching aids for her students.

She suggested that a little service should have been held in recognition of the teachers at an inexpensive place, such as a school, church or even the Sir Rupert Briercliffe Hall, instead of the grand gala affair that was held.

“That money is now in a septic tank!” the woman exclaimed.

You parents are so ungreatful...the one good thing that has been done to motivate us teachers in years to continue teach the rude out of place children that we have to teach each day...and you all vex. If it was a police/lawyer/doctor or other public servant Gala/Dinner no argument would have been made. Some of us teachers make less that $1, 800.00 a month and we do complain but to ourselves or friends...We also take our own money to feed and buy supplies for your children. Some parent rather do their nails, hair or buy iPad or rimes for their cars and not take care of their children. Shame on you...how many teachers in the BVI you know dont have kids of their own? Some of us have two, three even more and we too have to buy supplies for our kids and your kids but only you complaining...UNGREATEFUL!!!

The arogance of this minister to say he has no apologies, and the blind alligence of the Premier in supporting this slap in the face to the people, especially people like this parent, speaks to how far out of touch this NDP government is with reality. Hop is gone.

I have 2-questions and may be someone out there can answer them for me...question 1: as it relates to that gathering for the teachers i was made to understand that catering was actually done by a company owned by a member of the current administration BUT channelled through a third party company(the NDP calls such actions Government in the SUN-SHINE ) my second question 2: is it true that the house of assembly is now being catered by a company owned by a member or members of the current government(again government in the sun shine)....these are not accusations, simply 2 questions

The catering was done by a company that has no affiliation with any of the ministers, I know for a fact. The job was given to one company who in turn split it up and give couple other local companies the opportunity to make some income.

And put back in a government who doesnt' know when to stop spending.. that the books were in the red when NDP took over.. So you going to write a get for $20 knowing fulling well you only have $ 5 in the account. Please we don't need them either a NEW government and ALL the OLD government and OLD people/crooks need to go home retire and spend the little bit of government money they have left from what they stole. Let the young people see how it feels to steal from their own country and bring it down to financial shambles.

To see the money that is being wasted by this man that is so called the education minister is really a bad look on the government. A real educator would look at the students that need help the structural damage of the different schools. For a minister to waste this money on people who are getting PAID to teach you are spending $99,000.00 on a dinner. These public schools are in bad shape why not improving them and make them look better. Parents of these students should go against this man to show the wrong he did.

It is not just ESHS, the primary schools don't have paper towl, toilet paper, etc. They send out a list at the beginning of each year asking parents to assist with the supplies. Let's forget about the Dinner and focus on the Ministry not supplying the schools with the necessities such as printing paper, toilet paper etc. Come on!!! If the schools were asking for auxillary things, then I would understand but toilet paper??????

They have to do better than this!!

Myron this what happens when you vex so many people with arrogant & rude behavior. Also you continue to pick too many unnecessary fights with two many persons at the same time. He will learn that to whom much is given much is expected.

It is poor, inept management to squander 99, 000 dollars for an appreciation dinner then ask parents to provide school supplies. Moreover, there are approximately 86 students who potentially deserve scholarship. I there a silver lining anywhere in the management of the B.V.I?

There are so many examples of inappropriate spending in both the NDP and the VIP. Why is this one so special? I'll tell you why. It is because the money was spent on teachers. If Myron had given the teachers a swift kick this story would have been old news. You all have dealt the man his blow now move on. Find ways of fixing the problems rather than constantly complaining over spilt milk.

I find it funny that these teachers are asking parents to provide money for supplies, toilet paper etc. I wonder who authorised them to make these requests. Myron you need to put a stop to this immediately. I know the former Minister started this adopt a school thing instead of the government taking on their responsibility. However, this has gone too far and you need to stop teachers from doing this sort of thing. How do you know what the contributions requested are being used for.

Myron you have let us down with your conduct. $100,000 on a one night dinner. $100,000 on hiring a speech writer so she can tell him what to tell us. $100,000 to a friend to write a book & give her the copyrights. $1.5 mil on greendland field. Half a mil to a project manager for the airport project that ain't going no where. $200 mil Port Project that is riddled with corruption. $1mil plus to pay a crony for a ten year old airport claim that the courts ain't finish ruling on. The list goes on & on & on. I am totally ashamed of you & the NDP.

I am getting so sick and tired of the same negative piss day in and day out. No one is seeing that for years educators were not appreciated. Now comes a young blood doing the best he can to bring balance and structure to a system that is broken many of you cannot see the efforts he is doing.

We must learn to be grateful to the people that have sacrificed much of their lives for our children. Should it be that we turn all public schools into private schools so that we can say pay for your child you ungrateful parent?

Even in private schools parents raise extra funds for equipment and other supplies. If you did not know, education costs money. What parents must do is ensure that their child/children is capitalizing on it.

Minister Walwyn, you are doing a great job!
