ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- A massive amount of water is lost while making its way to taps in the Virgin Islands (VI).

Mr Mike Hewitt, Owner of Almaquin Enterprises and Operator Without Borders team member, revealed that the amount of water lost is around 80 per cent, during a press conference on Thursday, June 19, 2025.

He explained that there is always leakage within any system, even those that are properly managed, which is labelled as non-revenue. This built-in non-revenue leakage accounts for flushing of systems and firefighting, and ideally, that non-revenue leakage should be between 1o to 15 per cent.

Gov’t committed to fixing this problem

Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5), Minister for Communications and Works, said the government is committed to fixing the VI’s water issues head-on to provide reliability in the water supply.

The rate of water loss is alarming he said.

“A significant amount of water produced is lost before reaching your taps due to the leaking pipelines and ageing systems.”

According to Hon Rymer, this water loss is a direct contributor to the water issues many residents experience.

“We know that leaks along the roads persist for weeks, causing frustration and uncertainty about when relief will come,” the minister admitted.

He also said it has been found that repairing one leak can lead to another along the same line, further complicating the problem.

No easy fix- Hon Rymer

“I want to emphasise that repairs for such infrastructural water issues are no easy fix. Many times, the reasons for water disruptions, such as burst pipes, may seem trivial or even silly to the public; however, these are indeed the little fixes that create bigger problems.”

Hon Rymer said he is solution-minded and reiterated that residents and Virgin Islanders deserve better.

“You are getting better. We are committed to eventually fixing all of the water issues in the territory to enable a reliable and consistent flow of water to households and businesses daily.”

This is nothing new just look at the amount of water pipes broken along the hope hill road just before you reach Josiahs bay and days before they if it or turn off the water from being wasted. But who is responsible for this lost its the workers .

Took folks from out of the territory to highlight that? This is what happens when you use an outdated system. Stop trying to pump money into an old system and come up with a plan for a new one.

At Brandywine Bay area, there are a lot of broken pipes by the roads I drive daily. I constantly report them. It takes a few days to come and fix. But is not done properly and after a few months, it happens again. Could there be Brigade System for inspection on a 6 months or quaterly basis? It would save a lot of wasted water and headaches. Maybe sort of prevention plan system would be feasible. And less expensive?

So we need people from another country to let us know the pipes and water storages are leaking like a sieve. What an embarrassment for the government, they need to go to the eye doctor as they are blind, a 5 year old could have told them that. What’s next, are they going to get some group to them them know the sun sets in the west.

Gross lessness and mismanagement!! If you are producing 100 gallons, acre/feet or whatever and you are not accounting for 20 do you not have a responsibility and accountability to ascertain where is 80 is going? I leaving this right there. From the premier on down needs to be hauled on the carpet mehson. Not just in this government alone.

What's even more bizarre is that this doesn't seem to outrage most people. 80% of the water that we are paying over $20 million per year for is lost. Really? oh ok.... No wonder we suffer boy. A dumb bunch of people. This is absolutely outrageous and unacceptable. I figured the loss was high but this is completely unacceptable, and it has been allowed to go on for years. You want to know the worst part? We never had a water production problem. We always had a distribution problem. But these criminals still brought a company here to produce more water while not fixing the distribution problem. If this isn't the definition of corruption I don't know what is. You all can thank the guy down in D3 for this.
