ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The Virgin Islands has now recorded eight (8) COVID-19 related deaths, following the passing away of two females at Dr D. Orlando Smith Hospital today, July 15, 2021.

"The deceased are an 83-year-old female, and a 36-year-old female who were both patients at the Dr D. Orlando Smith Hospital at the time of their passing," the Ministry of Health and Social Development announced via a press release this evening.

Minister for Health and Social Development Honourable Carvin Malone (AL) expressed condolences to the families and loved ones on behalf of the Government of the Virgin Islands.

“Expressing condolences to the many bereaved families is getting harder and harder,” he said.

“The road to the other side of this surge will not be without challenges but I remain steadfast in knowing that if we all do our part, we will get through this! Let us continue to pray, adhere to established COVID-19 protocols and guidelines, follow curfew orders and get vaccinated,” Honourable Malone pleaded.

The COVID Hospital Admissions Summary statistics as of July 15 are as follows:

  • 11--persons admitted to ER (3 deaths)
  • 22--persons admitted to the COVID-19 ward (3 deaths)
  • 1--person admitted to Behavioural Health Unit
  • 5--persons admitted to ICU (2 deaths)
  • 1--person admitted to the Obstetric Unit
  • 41--hospital admitted patients all of whom are unvaccinated

1602 active COVID-19 cases

Acting Chief Medical Officer Dr Ronald E. George said as of July 14, 2021, there were 1602 active confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Territory.

Dr Georges said. “My heart goes out to the families who are affected by the death of a loved one. COVID is real and if we are to get through this, some of us will have to change our approach to this virus. We must continue to strictly adhere to the health and safety protocols and take advantage of the opportunity to get vaccinated.”

“Given that the BVI is experiencing high community transmission all symptomatic persons should immediately assume that they are COVID positive. Therefore, we need persons to adhere to isolation and quarantine orders,” Dr Georges stated.

Vaccination drive @ Festival Grounds

The unvaccinated members of the community are encouraged to take advantage of the vaccination drive this Saturday and Sunday, July 17 and 18, 2021, on the Festival Grounds in Road Town from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

“The more people we can get vaccinated the less the mortality rates. Persons who are being severely impacted from COVID-19 have preexisting medical conditions. We are making a special appeal to our vulnerable population to get vaccinated today to save your life tomorrow,” Dr Georges said.

The Public Health team is asking the community to have patience as members work assiduously.

Also, if persons have taken a COVID test and did not get their results back, they are asked to fill out the form via the link https://redcap.link/LABResults.

I pray for the family and friends that have lost loved ones.

Ministers, I ask, how is fasting and praying helping? How many more people have to die?

The Bible said "Prayer without works is dead". Prayers, with a pro-active approach, is what will help. We hardly hear from the Premier or Mnister of Health with updates. Remember how often we used to get updates before the crisis we are in now? Also, a total lockdown on the weekend should be considered - from 7 pm Friday to 5 am Monday. We are losing too many lives

The ministers have done all they can. They kept the place covid-free until we had a solution: the vaccine.

These deaths are not on the ministers or our government - the deaths are on our local population who failed to get vaccinated despite having every opportunity to do so for the last four months.
      • hmmm (16/07/2021, 08:18) Like (3) Dislike (11) Reply
Yes!! They ready to blame the Government. Why not get vaccinated and minimize the current number of deaths. They feel COVID is a joke. The US have 45 States with the new variant killing people daily. The Vaccine don't stop you from getting it from it prevents you from death. People with other serious illnesses might not be able to take the Vaccine but it will extend you life like kemo does to cancer patients.

No don’t blame it on unvaccinated. They don’t spontaneously carry the virus, no one does. Fact is we were on the path of giving increased freedom to the vaccinated while acting as if they could never be carriers.

You do know that humans have the ability to multitask right? If the Ministers and people of the VI want to fast and pray, they can do that as well as deal with this current outbreak. When did the government of the VI say that the ONLY plan of action was to simply fast and pray? Fasting and praying isn’t an all day affair. Get it together.

People are going to lose loved ones regardless whether it happens tomorrow, or next year. Covid is going to be around for years to come and those who refuse to get vaccinated will either become immune by being infected or will die. It’s as simple as that.

So we lock down for two weeks and the antivaxers go back to business as usual and get infected again? Where does that cycle end? Isn't there a more effective way to fight the disease? Like a vaccine that would prevent hospitalization and death? If we had a vaccine it would really help protect the people and end economic hardship. But wait! We do have a vaccine!

A more pertinent question is why are people not getting vaccinated. If enough are vaccinated, herd immunity can take effect and no need for any lockdowns. Cant just keep locking down everytime there is a jump in cases. People are dying because of lack of vaccinations, a lockdown is saving no one at this point

In the US children 12 and above are getting vaccinated. Some of us have children that are high risk and need them to have the extra layer of protection that the vaccine provides.

Please help me to understand what you the government and also the governor is waiting for to shut down the country at least for two weeks. We only have eight ventilators in our hospital which there no excuse for why so few after we had a chance to see what's going on around the world. Are we waiting for the point where we choose who live on them and who die???? Can't we see that bigger places all around the world who had fewer cases of this highly contagious delta variant close down in order to save lives and get it under control????. Yes we should admit we screwed up with the stimulas money and left the place broke but are we willing to sacrifice lives over the impact of shutting down for a few weeks and in the end when too many deaths are counted we still have to Shut down??????

Was the last lock down supported? Were vaccines provided to the public? Did we cry about wanting to be open to make $$$? ok then, we got what we wanted now we got to deal with it. The safety protocols remain the same. This is on we the people not anyone else and we can fix it if we do what we know works.

A lockdown will do absolutely nothing in the long term! The same people who are going to die in the days to come will simply die later on when we open back up as long as they refuse to get vaccinated.
    • Another solution (16/07/2021, 06:38) Like (17) Dislike (1) Reply
Very simple solution still available. Vaccinate. The people who have decided not to vaccinate, are potentially removing themselves from the living world. While I do not agree with their choice, I respect their right to make it. Stop working yourself up about their decision to risk death. Life goes on, even without them.

Premier even said and warned that he had done everything he could and let the cards fall where they may and now we see its the unvaccinated that are bringing the country down with all thier hoaxes and false news headlines. Now they want to shut for 2 weeks? What happens after 2 weeks, do we keep closing and become a 3rd world country because people can't behave and take a vaccine that more than 2 bikllion people worldwide have taken. BVI will die if we lockdown everytime somebody poison the mind of the people with false information. If you can take the vaccine , take it to save lives

And it will relieve the stress on the hospital system and personnel who, as a small community hospital, are currently face a full-out expanding medical catastrophe.
DO YOUR PART (Please!!) Get Vaccinated - twice!!

This is really sad. The division of the country. The lack of empathy towards persons who are fearful to take this vaccine, for those who were advised they should not take any vaccine and for the children who are not eligible to be given this vaccine. People have choices you say? Persons can choose to vaccinate or what?? Lose their job? Be exposed daily to persons in the community who know they have it but because Government took the stance of ' testing is less important and no more contact tracing' the spiteful ones who are nothing less than 'attempted murderers ( esp those who are deliberately not doing the protocols) are out and about in stores, using public transportation and other things. God is watching.

Hon. Premier, and Hon. Malone, act now please. Before all of the critocal front liners who are not vaccinated ( and probably even the vaccinated ones)become compromised and by extension the country. This gamble will not result in victory sad to say.

More options should have been brought here. At least moderna. England has that. And those in the 30 s and 40s who took astrazeneca were given moderna as the 2nd shot.

Ive been saying since Early 2920 that locking down the country shutting people out shutting the economy down wasnt a good stategy..What that does is encourage people with interest here finding away to get here, smuggling in was that way,, The country and borders were suppose to stay open, As it is now, Allow people to come in legally, bring their negative test, get tested upon arrival, do their quarantine get tested after,. Adhere to protocol, get a proper task force to enforce protocols this one aint working, will not work, the selection was bad, bias and political That was a better approach,,..We damn the USVI. Now they have the last laugh,,. We Suffer Job lost, We suffer, hardship, now we are suffering from covid increases and covid deaths. ..This is so painful.... The System failed us. ..The know it at all officials they refused to sit down and listen and take advise from other stake holders...They Did it their way, now they have to take the blame...They enjoy the short time success and the praises,,,.Imagine St Thomas have strict restriction on us...Lol. . They can say, they had it right, they did it right by keeping there country and economy open and we were wrong. The evidence now in favor of their case...

It would lead to so many more infections and so much more death. A lockdown now would do more harm than good. People need to vaccinate.
