FAT HOGS BAY, Tortola, VI- In just his first term and first year in office as an elected Member, Seventh District Representative and Minister for Education, Culture, Youth Affairs, Fisheries and Agriculture, Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has created history by becoming the first legislator for the district to open a District Office.

“We have to ensure that persons have access to their representative,” Dr Wheatley said at the simple opening ceremony at the building that once housed Elite Superette in Fat Hogs Bay, Tortola, on Saturday, February 21, 2020.

The opening hours are from 1:00pm to 5:00pm on Mondays to Fridays.

People have problems that need to be resolved- Dr Wheatley

“It is not good enough for the people in the community to have to flag you down in the road or hope to see you in the supermarket,” Dr Wheatley said, adding that the District Office is an effort to improve the representation for the people of the Seventh District.

While the previous representative, Dr Kedrick D. Pickering did not create a District Office in his some 20 years in office, he did make time once a week to meet with his constituents.

“People in the community have problems that need to be solved. They want to be able to speak to their representatives, they want to be able to explain some of the situations they find themselves in, some of the appeals for help they need to make, bringing attention to some issue in their community.”

Dr Wheatley said the office will have a secretary and “if somebody wants to come in and make a complaint or they want to make an appointment to see the representative, if they have something they want to drop off at the office or something they want to pick up at the office they could feel free to come to the office and interact with the secretary and I certainly will [have] discussions with the secretary on a daily basis.

“Anything that is urgent of course, I will discuss as soon as possible,” Dr Wheatley said, adding that the office provides him with the convenience of also getting work pertaining to his ministry done.

Giving the people a voice

After praying and giving the blessings for the office, Pastor Naaman Chalwell congratulated Dr Wheatley on his step forward.

“Dr Wheatley, we are thankful for you in our community and I believe this office is going to do wonders,” Pastor Chalwell said, adding that the office will give the people a voice and Dr Wheatley an opportunity to listen to their concerns.

“As your community speaks to you and you carry out their wishes, it is my privilege and opportunity to say to you God’s blessings, God’s grace and God’s mercies be with you as you serve your people in this community, the Seventh District, to the best of your ability,” Pastor Chalwell said.

@ nah man, DANG, you can't even wait and allow them to get the rest of the furniture in before commenting? They are just showing you where the office is now. Do you see the Secretary or computer or writing tablets yet? Sheesh! Some people just like to gripe about nothing.

i can be wrong, but didn't the Hon Dr. Pickering and Lloyd Black had an office for 7th/8th district in the building across from the East End Police Station at one point? I can understand that by a slight technicality, that office was not located in district 7, but I don't think it would be correct to make it seem like the 7th district never had an office before. I am open to correction if I am wrong.
