7 Special Education Teachers complete OECS course

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Seven Special Education Teachers in the Virgin Islands have completed the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Commonwealth of Learning Assistive Technology course.

Education Officer with responsibility for Special Educational Needs Mrs Afiya Smith said the six-week training course was aimed at identifying and utilising low-cost and low-tech devices to support the learning of students with special needs also known as the Introduction to Assistive Technology (AT).

Mrs Smith, according to a statement from Government Information Services (GIS), said, “The six weeks of training introduced the educators to free accessible assistive technology skills needed to support persons with disabilities and enable them to use technology for learning and work.”

The training was facilitated through the OECS Programme for Educational Advancement and Relevant Learning (OECS PEARL) with funding from the Commonwealth of Learning.

Successful educators

The seven successful educators include Mrs Afiya Smith, Dr Carlyn Benjamin-Raymore, Ms Tamika George, Mrs Rickollette Johnson, Mrs Levia Freeman-Malone, Ms Jan Christopher, and Ms Magdalene Alister.

Mrs Gillian Niles-John and Ms Indy Stephens De Leon from Disability Services also successfully completed the course.

According to the press release, the Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports aims to foster an inclusive environment for all students to strive and thrive.

It added that the success of this training is a testament to the Ministry’s commitment to strengthening its human capital through professional development opportunities, increasing access and providing equity for all students.

    Not even one man among them. The Young men them passion is to smoke weed and sell dope and go to prison. Sometimes the judge needs to sentence them to school with alternative.

    @hp don’t say that young people be looking for work but the reality is we have person in organization for over 25 plus years and going so how the young people them going get a chance when the older folks still working and don’t want go home
    So be careful on how u say certain things towards young people

      So what the older folks who are in the system for 25 plus years have to do with what you are talking about. For your information, most of the older folks are more dedicated and are passionate about what they do than the younger ones. So get off the older folks and find something positive to do.
