ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) has pointed out the alarming rate of accidents and serious injuries involving motor scooters in the territory’s roadways and has said not enough care and attention are being exercised by riders.

Statistics for 2022 show seven of the eight serious accidents recorded involved a motor scooter or motorcycle.

“Similarly, of the 35 accidents with injuries, 16, almost half, are scooter/motorcycle related. A total of 38 recorded accidents involved motor scooters or motorcycles for the year,” the RVIPF stated in a press release today, June 13, 2022.

Numbers ‘alarming’- Kishon Leslie

Head of the Road Policing Unit Kishon Leslie said the numbers are alarmingly high halfway through the year.

While not all the accidents are the fault of the scooter rider, the injuries sustained by the rider are far greater.

“Accidents involving scooters tend to be serious because the body of a rider is exposed and more vulnerable to injuries. Without a crash helmet these injuries are even more substantial to include broken bones and brain injuries,” Mr Leslie said.

‘Due care & attention’ not being exercised

He stated that scooters are very efficient in terms of travel, gas and parking, however, a higher level of attentiveness must be exercised by riders to avoid collisions. He noted that just the opposite is being practiced and he is not seeing the required due care and attention by riders on our roadways.

Police recorded five road fatalities for the year, three were riders of motor scooters.

The law against scooters is over 30 yrs old. Time to revisit the law and change the law. We all pay taxes and we all have rights.

So what are the Traffic Enforcement team at the RVIPF doing about any of that? Not much as far as I can see. Quite happy to let our young men maim themselves on a regular basis. Lots of laws, no enforcement. That's how you get here.

Natural selection by survival of the fittest being allowed to play out on BVI roads with motorcycles/scooter drivers v large steel vehicles either moving or stopped. Wonder what the accident numbers will be by the end of this year?

7 of 8 serious traffic telated collection, and body injuries involved scouters, and motor cycle riders, accordiling to the RVIPF. We know almost all the reason why, I hope.
Putting laws in place, and enforcing then will definitely help reduce these happening but will the disunited self proclaimed government, and some of of our RVIPF officers, and the majority of wreakless scouters and motor cycle riders comply? I don't know. Neither do you, but it worth a try

    Suggestion:
Maybe if not only the wreakless scouters and motor cycle riders bikes, those that are not been killed, but they are made to pay heavy financial fine because of the loss of lives of others unnecessarily plus years of jail time may help.
    Mine personal opinion

I'm going to say it again and again. Politicians do not let the blood of our young people fill the streets anymore. The time to take measures to save our goung men is now failure to seek to help them and the territories human capital is now so much potential is going to the grave, wheel chair, etc. The streets are filled with our young people blood. Are you willing to do the unconventional thing? If you fail our youths you fail in every thing else. It may be the right timing for the UK take over to help curb some of these issues facing us on a daily basis which you are afraid to touch. Can't you see do you need glasses or a mirror the statistics are infront of us and these are only accidents that have been reported what about others not been reported and nurse their injuries on their own.

I'm begging you all to take a closer look as to how you can help our young people. Some rebelling and have no regard for law and order. If you have no young people in your country you have no country. Yes I say so stop the blood from running on our streets you have the power to do it.

My youth is my responsibility. Accept responsibility for your children and stop pawning them off on Tom Dick and Harry.
The ones that are fllodjngcthe streets with their blood are/ were not positive contributors to society. No probl e m.
Those .worth living in a civil society are law abiding. Less noise for those of us who have to sleep because we work.

The police are powerless to enforce the rules. Enforcing the rule means catching these guys who are bobbing and weaving through the traffic. If the police chase them they will only be placing more peoples lives in danger. We all hear the outcry the other day when the guys were going the wrong way down the highway and the police try to pursue them.
They guys have no regards for life or anyone. So Mr. Police cool your foot and make natural selection reduce the number for us.
