ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The 2012 British Virgin Islands Motorsports Association (BMSA) car and bike show is anticipated to be one of its biggest, with over 32 overseas cars and bikes already registered to participate in the August 4, 2012 show set to take place at the Cruise ship dock in Road Town, Tortola.

This year is also expected to be a VI vs USVI clash with most of the overseas competition coming from the United States Virgin Islands.

In an exclusive interview with President of BMSA Roy Thomas, he said there were some issues with shipping of the cars from the other islands which resulted in mainly cars and bikes coming from the USVI only. Nevertheless, with such a strong turn-out, the competition is expected to be stiff for the top prizes this year which for the first time includes the Big Red People’s Choice Trophy.

Mr. deCastro, the founder and former president of BMSA, passed away late December 2010 following complications from surgery.

Thomas explained that the new trophy, which is expected to stand over 6 feet tall, will be awarded to the car or bike that is voted the best by patrons attending the event. He further revealed that persons entering the gate will be given a piece of paper to write their favourite on with a box provided for their entry.

While he could not gave a count on the local participation since registration is coming in very slow, Mr. Thomas anticipates a very high turn-out.

For the first time as well this year, there will be a Hot Dog eating competition with the winner receiving a Samsung phone.

Another first for the show, according to Mr. Thomas, will be the presence of international judges coming from Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago.

The categories remain the same with many looking to defeat 2011 Best in Shows, “The Little White Lie” and the Green Bug.

Stiff competition is expected in all categories which will include Best of Rims, Best Graphic, Best Paint Job, Best Interior and Best Display.

The Loudest Vehicle and Deepest Base are the main favourites of the show and with St. Croix taking the top prize last year, the VI will be looking to keep the prize at home.

“We encourage the community to come out and support us 100 percent,” Mr. Thomas said.

He also sent out a reminder that no registration will be done on the day of the show as was previously accepted. This year, registration must be completed on August 2, 2012.

As cool as I thought "Big Red" was. Why would I want a 6ft plus trophy of "Big Red" in my house, a mini version of it would be fine or some other way to pay homage to him would be better. I think that was over thought and is somewhat tacky.

I would hope it's just the name and not an actual statue of him.

Some really really slow ppl in Tola mehson! Did it say the trophy was a "life-sized" replica of him? No it did not! It stated that the ppl's choice Big Red trophy will be 6 foot tall - nothing said it was in Tony's likeness/image. Morons abound in this small place dread! If you cannot read and overstand please, please, please stay home!!!
