5 First District youths land jobs
Speaking to this news site over the past weekend, Honourable Fahie said that two of the five have been employed at the Long Bay Hotel. He said that the employers of the other three First District youth will be releasing information on this at their own pleasure so he did not want to disclose where they have been placed just yet.
“I once again thank all the companies that participated in the First District Job Fair and Career Expo. At this time I specifically thank Long Bay Hotel for sharing the vision of employing our youth in the hospitality industry.”
He noted that it was now up to those youths to make their mark with this opportunity afforded to them and expressed confidence that they would make him proud.
According to Honourable Fahie, the mission continues to ensure that all First District Youth that are currently unemployed and are willing to participate in this programme are gainfully employed.
“I will continue to exhaust all efforts and avenues to assist those youth. I will continue to play my part and play my part well in preparing our future for the future. This is one of many initiatives to come to help the youth of the First District and the entire Virgin Islands take their rightful place in this society,” he said.
Long Bay Hotel Restaurant Manager and Events Coordinator, Ms Carlotta Hamer stated that she is impressed with the young men's attitude towards their new jobs. “They seemed very eager to work. We have just reopened so we are just trying to pad up our staffing levels for the upcoming season. So Honourable Fahie's initiative, the job fair, was an opportunity for us to source labour from the community,” a release from Honourable Fahie quotes Hamer as saying.
According to the release, Ms Hamer further stated that the two young men will be on the regular probation period mandated under the Labour Code. She indicated that Long Bay Hotel and Resort is always trying to reach out to the community and mentioned the Resort's initiative of sponsoring graduation dinners for the schools in the district.
