4th place finish for Djimon L. Gumbs @ Pan Am Athletics Championship

MEDELLIN, Colombia- Two Virgin Islands (VI) athletes competed in Day 1 of the inaugural 2026 Pan American Athletics Championships in Colombia on Friday, June 26, 2026, at the Alfonso Galvis Duque Stadium.

Djimon L. Gumbs, who competed in the Shot Put event, pulled a massive 18.93 heave to finish in 4th place, the BVI Athletics Association (BVIAA) announced. This was his best throw on attempt 5 in a series of 6 rounds. His other numbers were 17.37, 18.11, 18.72, 18.82, and 18.88. 

Meanwhile, Olympian Rikkoi A.R. Brathwaite, though placing 3rd in Heat 2 of the 100M, his time of  10.41 seconds was not enough to advance. 

Day 2 continues today 

Day 2 of the event continues today, Saturday, June 27, 2026. Deya Y. Erickson (100M Hurdles); and Beyoncé A. DeFreitas (100M & 200M) round off team VI. 

The inaugural Pan American Athletics Championship features combined events, track and field, and race walking with 407 senior athletes from 27 registered nations competing for titles and podium finishes on a world-class stage.

Gold medalists in individual events at this championship automatically qualify for the 2027 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru.
