4th HoA gets down to business under VIP leadership
Following an invocation and election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker, those taking the Oath of Office swore, to solemnly and sincerely be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, her heirs and successors and the people of the VI, “according to law.”
Members
Those sworn in as Official Members of the 4th HoA are; Baba Azziz, Alvera Maduro-Caines (D6), Shereen E. Flax-Charles (AL), Sharie B. De Castro (AL )and Messrs, Andrew A. Fahie (Premier/R1), Julian Fraser RA (R3), Carvin Malone (AL), Marlon A. Penn (Opposition Leader/D8), Kye M. Rymer (D5), Neville A. Smith (Deputy Speaker/AL), Melvin M. Turnbull (D2), Dr Natalio D. Wheatley (D7) and Vincent O. Wheatley (D9).
Venued at the Multi Purpose Sports Complex in Road Town, Tortola, the First Session of the Fourth HoA got underway with elected members being ushered to their respective places, before taking the solemn oath.
Empty Seat
While five seats were set for the members of the Opposition, one remained conspicuously empty throughout the session—a result of the resignation of former Minister and District Four Representative, Mark H. Vanterpool.
Dignitaries/Visitors
Those in attendance for the First Sitting of the 4th HoA, include members of Judiciary, Overseas Dignitaries such as Governor of neighbouring United States Virgin Islands (USVI), Governor Albert Bryan Jnr and his Lieutenant Governor, Mr Tregenza A. Roach, VI’s Deputy Governor David D. Archer, several members of the domestic clergy, former members of the HoA, heads of departments, including statutory bodies, captains of industries, public officers, residents, teachers and students among others,
The HoA was dissolved on January 25, 2019, last, under the leadership of the NDP and then Premier, Dr the Honourable D Orlando Smith—paving, the way for the February 25, 2019, General Elections, which saw that party being ousted convincingly by the VIP.
