POCKWOOD POND, Tortola, VI- Director of Waste Management, Mr Marcus E. Solomon has praised the efforts of the Virgin Islands community for its contribution to the recycling programme.

Mr Solomon said 46 bales of plastics were exported to Honduras during this month (September) for recycling which shows that the community diverted almost 700,000 plastic bottles away from our waste stream.

The director said the concept of recycling is relatively new to the Virgin Islands and that it is a pleasure to see that the programme is growing and the positive response the department is receiving.

Start recycling today!

Mr Solomon, according to a Government Information Service (GIS) press release, said: “I want to take this time to encourage persons who are not recycling to start today. It is easy to start by separating your plastics and glass. You can also compost your organic waste. When you are ready drop off your plastics or glass at any of our conveniently located recycling stations throughout the Territory.”

Mr Solomon said businesses can take their recyclables in the case of plastics directly to Paraquita Bay and their glass to Pockwood Pond. He added that the ‘We Recycle programme’ is a wonderful programme and is urging everyone to use it and do their part to keep the Virgin Islands clean and green.

The scheduled days for the collection of recycling bins are as follows: Virgin Gorda – Monday, Wednesday and Friday; Jost van Dyke – Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday; and Tortola – daily.

Is it always about money and who is or isn’t making? This effort affects us all as that means less plastic to be burned giving off toxic fumes that can cause untold harm to our bodies.

Kudos to Solid Waste and all entities involved. Let’s continue our efforts to have a cleaner and greener VI.

Why are we shipping this waste product to Honduras? This can be stripped and turn into recycled material for temporary dockage for boats, mats for day care indoor and outdoor playgrounds. This is gold for some countries, because they know what todo with it. Please Mr Solomon get help to use the material in BVI.
