GREAT HARBOUR, Jost van Dyke, VI- The brand new Jost van Dyke (JvD) Primary School, constructed at the tune of $4,333, 743.86 by Quality Construction Limited and executed by the Recovery and Development Agency (RDA), had its official opening ceremony yesterday, January 18, 2024.

Speaking at the opening ceremony for the multi-purpose educational facility, Premier Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) said despite the small student population, the school is being delivered as part of equity to the people of the sister islands as they deserve the same quality of education as their counterparts in other parts of the VI.

“A lot of times, individuals who live on these islands with smaller populations feel neglected. They feel as though their needs are not being adequately looked after. They feel ignored and they feel forgotten, and it is our duty as a government, our moral responsibility, to ensure that despite where you are in the Virgin Islands… you deserve the same quality of education and the same quality of public services from your government,” he said.

The Premier added, “As difficult as it may be and as much as it may cost, it is our responsibility to ensure that you have equity across the board,” he said.

The facility which started construction in 2022 not only has classrooms, but also offices and an auditorium to conduct school meetings and community meetings as well.

Well equipped building

Initial plans also indicated that the building would boast a resource center that would allow the students to be able to do library research.

The Premier said even though the population is small, Jost van Dyke is big and even though the facility will house just about 25 students, it is built to stand the test of time with proper maintenance and technological upgrades.

Meanwhile, Premier Wheatley said the facility can also withstand hurricanes and the associated hurricane-force winds.

“I want to congratulate the RDA For managing this project. The Chair, the CEO, and the staff of the RDA. I want to congratulate the contractor, Quality Construction, who has delivered so many projects on behalf of the RDA and behalf of the Government, give brother Roy Garraway a round of applause,” he said.

The Premier also recognised the Minister for Education, Hon Sharie B. deCastro (AL), and her entire team for their hard work and for fighting for the education sector.

Among the persons present for the opening ceremony were Deputy Premier Hon Lorna G. Smith, OBE (AL), Junior Minister for Culture and Tourism Hon Luce D. Hodge Smith (R4), Junior Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries Dr the Hon Karl Dawson (R1), Opposition Leader Hon Ronnie W. Skelton (AL), Second District Representative Hon Melvin M. Turnbull (R2) and Chief Education Officer Orlandette R. Crabbe.

We will assume its time for the government to start begging our businesses to outfit the school but in meantime we have half of HOA traveling daily to ‘attend’ conferences for climate change which has yet to bring home 1 cent of benefit to our territory except goodie bags.

Well if JVD School cost 4.3 Million, How much will ASPS School cost ?
    • charles (19/01/2024, 18:05) Like (9) Dislike (1) Reply
Realistically $5m for the structure at most, however once you include bribes, overages, and that 20% district or minister contract award kick back….$10m. Again they will be begging for people to buy chalkboard and tables to put in the school.

Value for money it could have been 1 student. That 1 student could change the trajectory of the territory much less for 25. You all need to stop it invest in our young people who you are always saying is the future of tomorrow. Please let it be so stop the nonsense they have value.

They are just sickening. I guess they don't stop to think of the message they are sending to the young people or maybe they think the young people are too young to read the blogs. When considering the comparing the cost, I bet they never considered having to transport materials to JVD, they never considered having to transport employees on a daily basis, they look at the building but not the solid concrete walls around it to prevent flooding and landslide. They think small minded of 25 children but I'll one of the problems that we repeat around here is planning for today and not tomorrow. So they may have felt better to see a school built that can ONLY accommodate 25 children and when the enrollment rate climbs to 50 they you'll have to rebuild...chupesss.

They are comparing the cost of this JVDPS building against the cost of EAPS. That's an unfair comparison. First and foremost, everybody that has been building, knows that the cost of building materials went up a lot since covid. Second, it costs extra to transport materials and personnel to the sister Islands. And third, the people of jvd more than deserve a building of this magnitude. They have been neglected for years. The empty space can serve multiple purposes. Library, community center, resource center, emergency shelter. About time we started building today with the tomorrows in mind. The key to building longevity is maintenance.

Wake Up people. That's not for the students. It's for the vaccinated people. It's their 15 minutes home. No rebuilt school Tortola but jvd get a huge building for a few students

For that amount of money, furniture, and solar power system should have been included.

Hope it has showers and a kitchen, and can be used as a well equiped hurricane shelter for the residents.

For the record, it does have SEVERAL kitchens and showers for that same purpose. I was able to tour the facility before it was 100% completed and was impressed. The furniture was already being delivered (I don't know who footed the bill...contractor or???) but I saw brand spanking new desks and chairs, whiteboards, instruments...the whole nine yards. JVD thanks VIP, we only ask that a plan is put in place for the old school building so that it doesn't stay there to continue to be an eyesore.

Most of you bloggers never built a chicken coop in your lifetime, so you all don't know the real cost of building a structure of that magnitude. Building materials tripled in recent years, plus everything has to be taken to the island by barge. I wouldn't even mention the cost of labour (payroll takes a huge chunk of the money).
