4.3 magnitude quake rattles the VI

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Residents awoke from their slumber early this morning, Sunday May 27, 2012 to “shaking movements” in their homes when a 4.3 magnitude earthquake rattled the Virgin Islands (VI).

Around 3:50 am this reporter felt her bed shaking, and the tremors continued for about 30 to 40 seconds. Soon after, four panicked residents called this news agency to report the earthquake.

According to the Puerto Rico Seismic Network, the earthquake occurred at 3:45 am in the Virgin Islands basin.

The distances of the quake spanned 26.67 Km South-Southeast of Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, USVI; 43.19 Km Southwest of Road Town, Tortola, VI and 134.96 Km East-Southeast of San Juan, the Puerto Rico Seismic network added. The location was measured at Latitude:18.113 and Longitude:-64.868.

Its depth was measured at 4 kilometres. No tsunami alert has been issued.

        We in the BVI have a lot to be giving praises and thanks to God for.....not one man reported dead or no tsunami threat.

    I must say it was a scary few seconds. I was just getting in and thought I was so drunk that the place was shaking. LOL

    I had just gotten home from the strip club and sat in my living room and felt the earthquake, mehson I had never felt such a powerful earthquake.

    we must thank god that this was not like the Haitian situation as the quake that struck Haiti on Jan. 12, 2010, reduced much of the capital, Port-au-Prince, to rubble.
