423 active Covid cases in VI; Samples being tested for Omicron
This is according to the Territory’s Epidemiological Summary, which said the latest figures are the result of testing done on December 30, 2021, and reported on December 31, 2021.
According to Acting Chief Medical Officer Dr Ronald E. Georges, over the last seven days, from December 24, 2021, 363 new cases of COVID-19 were reported and new cases continue to be reported daily.
“As previously mentioned, all samples previously sent to CARPHA for typing were positive for the Delta variant and over the last two weeks more than 90 samples were sent for genetic typing to determine if the Omicron variant has been introduced into the Territory,” Dr Georges said in a COVID-19 update today, December 31, 2021.
Omicron ‘not yet’ identified in VI- Dr Georges
Dr Georges emphasised; however, that the Omicron variant has not yet been identified in the Territory.
Meanwhile, there are 8 hospitalisations due to COVID-19 and, according to Dr Georges, the Ministry of Health will very closely be monitoring hospitalisations, the reason for hospitalisation, and the severity of illness to gauge the progress of this outbreak.
“If this outbreak is found to be related to Omicron we can expect a sharper and quicker increase in cases than in previous outbreaks. Evidence suggests that Omicron results in milder disease, fewer hospitalisation, less severe disease, and less death than Delta, but leads to many more infections,” Dr Georges cautioned.
