LONG SWAMP, Tortola, VI - The signing of a contract in the amount of four million, one hundred and fifty-two thousand, four hundred and fifty-two dollars and fifty cents ($4,152,452.50) for the installation of sewerage gravity main lines from Parham Town to Long Swamp will significantly address a long-standing sewage issue in the Seventh District.

The Government of the Virgin Islands signed a contract with Biosafe Treatment and Septic Solutions for the installation of the main lines, and the intended timeline for the project is eight (8) months.

Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) stated that the government is committed to solving the age-old challenges that the Territory, but in his district in particular, has in relation to sewerage disposal infrastructure.

Biosafe will go down in history

Premier Wheatley said, “This is a major, major contract. It's a contract of over four million dollars, and these gentlemen at BioSafe have done a good job of being able to manage the contracts that they've had thus far. I wish them well, again, with this particular contract.

"Their names will go down in history as it pertains to establishing an efficient, working sewage system in the East, which is something that we have needed for many years. It is going to help our community be healthier.’’

Public to be kept informed

Minister for Communication and Works Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5) gave a synopsis of the works to be completed, noting that going forward, the Ministry of Communications and Works will keep the public informed on the progress and advisories as it relates to the construction of the sewerage gravity main line that may affect traffic in the near future.

Honourable Rymer said, “We are back around this table again, and this is based on the great work that you have been doing with the past contracts, and we're yet here to sign another critical contract in terms of our sewage network that we are working to complete.

"This has been spoken of for quite some time, and we are about one-half complete with the East End /Long Look Sewage Project, and this would be the completion of the other half. This would be from Parham Town into Long Swamp, and I want to firstly congratulate you on winning this contract, another open tender that you won based on your submittals.’’

He added that the cabinet would have also approved the recommendation from the Central Tenders Board to award the contract to Biosafe Treatment and Septic Solutions, and today this signing is to cement the work that needs to be done to complete the sewage project for the East End Long Look community.

‘’We are quite excited about it, and we look forward to a continued partnership with you,” Hon Rymer stated.

These things have to happen because we have a poor infrastructure development and a lapidated Water and Sewage Department that is incapable of doing such work to save the government money, but due to lack of vision and creativity by the government the work has to go out to a private firm at an astronomical costs.

Wonderful. We need to see these contracts. I just ask the local company, in fact, I am begging, please get some expertise from overseas to assist. Let these roads last a little longer than three months. We are tired; our vehicles are broken. Help us, please.

Let’s hope that at the end of the day that the project is completed on time and on budget. We all know based on history, what is most likely to happen and in time to come the concerns about the EE / LL Sewerage Project will be the subject for debate again and another set of millions will be budgeted for it again. Mr. Minister and Head of the RDA you have a responsibility to the taxpayers of this country to ensure that this project is completed. For right now, I’ll just wait and see what the outcome will be.

Over the years the amount of money that was spent on these sewerage problems from Long Swamp down is more than John had read about. Every election year or prior to the election, Caribbean Basin Enterprise would have been awarded a significant sum of money to remedy the sewerage problems, but still after the fact, the issues remained. Let’s hope that this time around that the sewer age problems in this area is fixed and that the hatchet is buried once and for all. Kye and Wheatley need to understand that this is the taxpayers money and it should not be compromised. Let’s hope that this project doesn’t cost them the next election.
