ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI– Operations over the weekend by the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) resulted in the detention of four scooters and one vehicle, and the arrest of one driver.

The ten-member operation team which included officers of the Road Policing Unit, Armed Response Unit and Beat and Patrol reported three persons for prohibited tint, two for having a loud muffler and one for driving unlicensed and uninsured vehicle, a press release from the RVIPF today, June 22, 2021, stated.

"All six will subsequently be charged," the RVIPF said.

Officers also issued eight tickets; two for driving without seatbelts, four for standing in the tray of a moving truck, one for riding without a helmet and one for not having a front identification plate.

Commissioner of Police Mark Collins lauded the officers for their persistence over the past weeks in insuring that vehicle users comply with the Road Traffic Laws. He reminded persons that operations such as these will continue through the summer months particularly targeting scooters with loud mufflers and heavily tinted vehicles. As such, persons are strongly advised to make the necessary modifications to their vehicles to comply with the law.

The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force has executed several similar operations since the end of April of this year.

Please, please, have them start issuing tickets to the vehicles parked on public roadways blocking traffic. Lower Fort Hill and Great Mountain roads are single lane a lot of the time with one instance over the weekend when Great Mountain road would have been impossible for fire trucks or ambulances to get through. This is as much a safety issue as an annoyance for everyone needing these major roads for access into and out of Road Town.

MANY MORE TO GO. I DONOT HAVE A PROBLEM WITH BIKE RIDERS AS LONG AS THEY RIDE THE SAFE WAY. IT IS TO A POINT WHERE I AM IMMUNE TO THE NOISE. IF I HAD A DOLLAR FOR EVERY NIGHT I WAS DISTURBED OUT OF MY SLEEP FROM THE LOUD BIKES, I WOULD HAVE ENOUGH TO PUT ON A HOUSE DOWNPAYMENT.

Now police station become a graveyard for the scooters? This is a 1960 solution to a twenty century problem. How can the police help the community change their ways of using their transportation. May I add that when the approval was given to have scooters and big bikes into the territory , these crazy behaviour would occur that some solutions be put in place. Give the scooter three warnings ,after which they don't own a license to drive again. As one of those warning would be to go get training to operate a scooter.
