ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Thirty-one (31) persons have recited the Oath of Allegiance and Pledge of Loyalty to the King last week, to complete the process of becoming British Overseas Territories Citizens (BOTC) of the Virgin Islands.

Governor John J. Rankin, CMG congratulated the new citizens during a naturalisation ceremony at Government House and reminded them that with this citizenship status also comes great responsibility.

“The new freedoms you now enjoy also come with new responsibilities, moral responsibilities as well as legal ones. To uphold our shared values – including respect for democratic rights and freedoms and respect and concern for others less fortunate than ourselves,” governor Rankin told the 31 new citizens.

“I hope as you exercise your new freedoms for travel and employment, you will never forget that you will be ambassadors for the British Virgin Islands and the United Kingdom," he said.

He reminded citizens that their contribution to the development of the VI community has already been substantial.

I am pretty sure this was a naturalization ceremony for British citizenship, not BOTC citizenship.

Are the backgrounds of the people given citizenship in this little territory checked before it is done? British Virgin Islanders used to be a law abiding friendly people. Seeing the amount of trouble we are now facing, especially with our young people, it is time to be serious about how many more persons we can accommodate. Do we have the money or jobs to help? Let us be careful. This thing is not a right. Do. Not destroy this country any further.

Never saw so much naturalization/belongership took place within this Territory within a few years span. Yet children born there to foreign mothers are not considered automatic citizens.
