30 year-old poles force closure of Old Recreational Ground!
The facility is used to hold softball games.
In explaining the decision, Acting Director of the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports, Patrick Harrigan informed Virgin Islands News Online that he received a call from a concerned parent last week about the condition of the poles. One of the poles was shaking.
“The posts have been erected since 1982 and are rotten at the base. So I called Hon. Myron Walywn and he came by along with personnel from the BVI Electricity Corporation to look at them. Therefore, for the safety for everyone the Minister has ordered them to be removed immediately,” Harrigan said.
To this end, the facility was promptly closed and on Sunday March 4, the five poles were pulled down.
“If one of them had fall and hit someone, we would never have been able to lived that down. The Ministry’s policy is that safety comes first,” he added.
Asked how long the ground will be closed for, the Acting Director of the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports disclosed it will be re-opened by tomorrow, Tuesday March 6 for players to use.
However, due to obvious consequences, no more evening games will be played until the new posts are installed, which could be done in another three to six weeks, Harrigan stated.
“I know the Minister wants it done as soon as possible because we don’t want to hold back the Men’s and Women’s League scheduled for March month end for any length of time,” he added.
