ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Rotted electricity poles have forced the Education Ministry to close the Old Recreational Ground over the weekend citing safety measures for players and spectators.

The facility is used to hold softball games.

In explaining the decision, Acting Director of the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports, Patrick Harrigan informed Virgin Islands News Online that he received a call from a concerned parent last week about the condition of the poles. One of the poles was shaking.

“The posts have been erected since 1982 and are rotten at the base. So I called Hon. Myron Walywn and he came by along with personnel from the BVI Electricity Corporation to look at them. Therefore, for the safety for everyone the Minister has ordered them to be removed immediately,” Harrigan said.

To this end, the facility was promptly closed and on Sunday March 4, the five poles were pulled down.

“If one of them had fall and hit someone, we would never have been able to lived that down. The Ministry’s policy is that safety comes first,” he added.

Asked how long the ground will be closed for, the Acting Director of the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports disclosed it will be re-opened by tomorrow, Tuesday March 6 for players to use.

However, due to obvious consequences, no more evening games will be played until the new posts are installed, which could be done in another three to six weeks, Harrigan stated.

“I know the Minister wants it done as soon as possible because we don’t want to hold back the Men’s and Women’s League scheduled for March month end for any length of time,” he added.

How the hell you mean the man too hasty? Did you see the state of those poles? If one had fall and hit someone, you would have been the frst person bloging why he did not take it down before. Obviously the safety of the people who plays on the park is of no importance to you. No one said the park would be closed forever. They need time to put the new poles up. It is dangerous to play in that park with those poles in the condition they are in. Three months of NDP being elected and everyone expects them to move mountains in that time. When they do something, noise makers and haters open their mouths..some of you remind me of the people of Israel..

taking down the poles is long overdue- not only rotten, but also the wiring was bad- best to do it now than keep waiting, waiting waiting. little league miss one weekend only- softball games can be played during the day and maybe they will have to start on time for a change too- rather than keep the youths out til all hours

This is a news flash. Well, not really. If you an asset whether a house, distribution system , boat or a car, you got to inspect and maintain to extend the design life and to deliver reliable service.Further, you to replace it before puts down or present a public safety hazard. But in the BVI it appears as if everything is run to failure before any action is taken. This is a plan but not a good one that is in the public's interest.. Everything is an emergency and a crisis. Many of the emergencies and crises are avoidable. Gov. Should excel at crisis management. But only when necessary.. Does the BVIEC and MEC have maintenance and operations staff that are deployed to conduct periodic inspections to asses the material condition of Of their assets? And if so what is done with the data? And if no why not? The poles are above ground and easy to inspect and determine that they pose a healthy and safety threat to the public. Chups!!! For goodness sakethe BVI has a s all distribution system. It has adequate staff to provide a higher level of service. Would a private company operate it more effectively and at a lower cost their assets.

We have been begging and pleading for years for these poles to be removed and replaced to no avail. The VIP Govt did not see it as a priority. At least we now have a minister who listens to our concerns and is trying to get things done. We are happy that the poles have been removed and we would be even happier when they are replaced. Thank u Minister Walwyn

Nobody oppose to Myron talking down the polls if they pose a safety issue, then down they must go. But the problem has always been the way he does things. He comes in, ask no questions and does thing like a crazy man in a rum shop. Ask questions; speak to sports fans, players and different users of the ball field. We elect you but please get in the habit of consulting with the people we have no one man show in the BVI this is not your private business this is the people’s business Mr. Myron. GET THAT IN YOUR BIG HEAD FAST BOSS.

I agree with the move. Better safe than sorry, hasty or not. The only question I have is . . . . .why only now? They didn't rot overnight.

Oh my gosh what is wrong with you people all the poles was installed around the same time so why change one and leave the rest and then in a couple of days hold up the process AGAIN to make other changes, is best he change all at once. And can't you people read A CONCERN PARENT CALLED, that means her child/ren does be out there and she cares not only for her child but for others. An ounce of prevention is better than pound of cure. Great Job Minister continued to do your thing, thats why the change was MADE!!!!!!!!!! Thumbs up
