FISH BAY, Tortola, VI- Motorists from since Sunday, October 16, 2022, have been enjoying the smooth uninterrupted ride through Fish Bay; however, they will soon have to contend with speed bumps.

This is according to the Virgin Islands Recovery and Development Agency (RDA) on October 17, 2022.

The RDA said asphaltic works commenced on Saturday, October 15, 2022, with preparatory works which comprised of the proper cleaning of the new road pavement, tacking of road edges and asphalting the road gaps.

Works continued on Sunday, October 16, 2022, with the laying of the asphaltic concrete which is 90% completed. The final works were scheduled for execution and completion by noon on Monday, October 17, 2022.

Speed bumps coming

Three speed bumps were to be installed on Monday; however, this was not done.

According to the Head of Communications at the RDA, Colene A. Penn, the speed bumps will be installed later this week, weather permitting.

Persons on social media have been asking for the speed bumps to cater to ‘low’ vehicles.

The Asphaltic Works contract on the Fish Bay Road was executed by the Recovery and Development Agency (RDA) through local contractor Tortola Paving Ltd as part of the Government of the Virgin Islands Recovery to Development Plan.

Financing is provided by the Caribbean Development Bank, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Loan.

This minister who is responsible for the roads is a waste of time. This is a shame to see the condition this man have the BVI in and people talking saying he is doing a great job. This man is the worse communication and work minister ever.all my life i live in the BVI and i have never seen anything like this . Look at the bushes and the grass in this country all in the capital. This is shameful. Something is wrong with this man and the man in change is no different to him . This man is the stupidest political lenders i have ever seen. This man is in charge of this country and look at the district that he ask the people to elect him in. This man is crazy. Pickering had Long Look in bad condition but not as bad as this. Mr. wheatley you are a crazy man. Lets wait and see if you have it in you to go back to these people to ask them to put you back there. This is bad. Please. Please. Please get it fix. If we do not see any thing happening by next week we will march to the Government House. This is no joke. Get it fix.

Only a handful of people live Fish Bay. Leave the road without speed bumps so the scooter riders can have a field day speeding or racing from one end to the next. I am sure they will vote for all them greedy politicians who gave themself three years severance pay but now say they have to go through hoops and ladders to gave out a bush cutting contract.
And who are these persons "asking for speed bumps to cater to low vehicles?" I normally see the low vehicles angling across the speed bumps. Often times other drivers have to wait while they 'shashay' across the road.

It is MASA's comment that makes absolutely no sense. Why would he equate 3 speed bumps at Fish Bay to be as bad as putting speed bumps on hills? Stop justifying stupidness from others.

are the most effective method of speed control on the BVI's roads with big rocks for their feet and head. Eventually this new road surface will have potholes, cracks and other deformities to slow down the speeding vehicles. Also please make the sleeping policemen extra fat to keep those low rider vehicles and motorcycles out of Fish Bay.

I realized that the bvi believes in the sleeping police a whole lot. No biggy but please have proper standards for there built. Having a speed bump too sharp and too high causes a lot of damage to the vehicle. Also learn to mark your bumps often not just once every 4 yrs. Bvi have issues in maintaining the public roads! You shouldn't have to remember where a speed bump is but see it when approaching. Thank you

A center line denotes two way traffic giving a hint for drivers attempting to orientate their vehicles direction , they’re not a navigation device to be straddled to guide you from home to your destination and back!

Make the bumps plenty tall so they work. Roads a mess here yet all you moo moos want to lower your POS Nissan Sentra to look like gangsters lol. I got no pity for people too stupid to buy a car not built for the territory.

Indeed, these traffic calming devices are needed to a)to reduce speeding, b)avoid traffic accidents and c) enhance pedestrian and others users of the roadway experience. Nonetheless, a behavioral change in the safe use of the roadway(s) to protect the health, safety, and well-being of all road users is needed. This public education and outreach must include parents, schools, police, religious institutions, social institutions, NGOs, government and the public .

Two Speed bumps properly place will be very effective 3 will be excessive and messes with the reasonable flow of traffic. I must say it looks good. Congrats to RDA and PWD. Hope they give us a 5 years maintenance free smooth ride..

Is it possible that DMV can open at 8am instead of 9am?
And after turn around time, first number call around 10am .I don't see why you have to take a day off to license a vehicle!!
  • what (19/10/2022, 09:19) Like (3) Dislike (2) Reply
People let's be realistic, the speed bumps is to ensure that persons are able to go and support the politicians businesses in the area. It has no other useful value. Number two, three speed bumps on a highway, and when the ambulance have delays we blame them. The height of foolishness in this place is a problem.

If they have spare tarmac for the speed humps. Possible can you use it to fill the pot holes first before you install the speed humps. The roads are a so bad and the grass if so overgrown. It's just a sheer lack maintenance is just insulting to the drivers who have to navigate the roads day and night. We need qualified people to install the proper road signs and carfully designed junction to avoid all the accidents.

ITS SAD THAT EVERYTIME A NEW ROAD BUILT, THERE HAS TO BE SPEED BUMPS.ITS CERTAINLY TELLS EVERYONE OUR DRIVING CULTURE. AND THE WAY ONES DRIVE LOGICALLY ITS THE SAME WAY THEY BEHAVES AT HOME.
PLUS THIS NEW ROAD HAS POOR DRAINAGE- WATER ALWAYS REMAINS STAGNANT AFTER RAINFALL

It has a speed bump between PG and CTL. That’s one. Just need two more of you insist
  • stupps (19/10/2022, 21:21) Like (1) Dislike (0) Reply
That stretch of road never had speed bumps except for the CTL area and it dont need any more. All these speed bumps helping mash up the roads with their poor designs. Check by the college, all the 50-leven pot holes are right by the speed bumps, fill um today them eat back out in 1 month time. More so, there is no regard for emergency services getting to a scene quickly or transporting seriously injured people to the hospital. The shaking up alone in an ambulance going to kill or make injuries worse.

IT DON'T NEED A PIECE MORE SPEED BUMP IN FISH BAY. It don't even have speed bumps on the stretch of road from the Port Purcell Round About to CSY and it don't need any...leave Fish Bay road as is please!
