3 Peat! Tortola All Stars retain VG Summer Jam title
Hundreds turned out to witness Bass’ commanding effort that earned him the MVP title and continued the team’s dominance in the Delta Petroleum sponsored VG Summer Jam. Sponsorship for the game also came from NAGICO Insurance Ltd.
Bass opened the scoring with a 3-pointer for the Tortola team but this was quickly answered with 3-point play from VG All Stars.
Despite the very vocal presence of VG supporters in the audience, this did not faze the Tortola All Stars as they led for most of the game with Ray Victor adding 16 points and Steve Parillon scoring another 13 points to contribute to the win.
During the closing stages, however, the VG team came within touching distance of snatching victory as the scores were tied 70-apiece in the 4th quarter with just over 3 minutes left on the game clock.
Shomar “Shumba” Georges top scored for VG with 19 points while Travis Isaacs added 15 points and Bodean Samuel added 13 points.
Coach of the winning team, Brian ‘Bash’ Brewley said afterwards that from the time his team left Tortola, victory was the only thing on their mind. “Next year I’m not coming, I’m sending somebody else,” Bash stated. “When you come to deal with me, I strictly win. I’m hard to deal with, I’m hard to deal with. Next year I’m sending somebody [else] for Virgin Gorda to stand a chance,” he added.
Bash said his team was more athletic and quicker than the other team and this contributed to the victory. “Although we didn’t practice together, that gel is already there from get go,” he said.
Earlier, in a low scoring affair for the over-40 game, the North West Surfers defeated the Flyers 41-35.
Dudley Richardson led the way for the Surfers with 10 points, but along with Gregory Romney, the two were the only players in double figures for the winning team.
Although First District Representative Hon. Andrew A. Fahie didn’t trouble the scorers during the game, he put in a respectable performance and ran the court hard during the game.
Fahie expressed that now that his team has sealed first place, they will just be trying to take it one possession at a time from here on and try to take the championship down to the First District.
“I want to thank my teammates, they played well tonight. The Flyers played an excellent game, they weren’t an easy team to play and I know that they’ll be around in the end just like us, I feel that way.”
