The British Virgin Islands Film Commission has announced an extension of the submission deadline for National/Local entries to the 2026 284 Excellence Film Festival, giving BVI filmmakers, residents and other eligible local creatives until 3rd October 2026 to submit their films for consideration. The extension applies to films produced from January 2024 onwards and is intended to provide local filmmakers with additional time to complete and submit their work, while encouraging greater representation of Virgin Islands stories and creative voices at this year’s festival.

“We want to ensure that our local filmmakers have every opportunity to be represented on screen at the festival,” said BVI Film Commissioner Natalie Hodge. “There is tremendous creative potential within the Territory, and this extension gives filmmakers additional time to look at what they have produced since January 2024, complete projects currently underway, or even create something new. We encourage both established and emerging filmmakers to take advantage of the extended deadline.”

The National category forms part of the second edition of the 284 Excellence Film Festival, which takes place from 29th October to 1st November 2026. The festival returns following a successful inaugural edition in 2025, which attracted 30 film submissions from 16 locations across its International, Regional and National categories and brought together filmmakers, industry professionals, students and audiences from the BVI, wider Caribbean and international film community.

The National category also includes the ‘Say Less’ Student Smartphone Film Competition, providing young filmmakers aged 9–14 and 15–19 with an accessible introduction to filmmaking by challenging them to create short films shot entirely on smartphones or tablets.

Second Edition Builds on Inaugural Festival

Building on the foundation set last year, the 2026 festival will once again feature International, Regional and National categories, with screenings and opportunities for filmmakers to engage directly with established industry professionals, while celebrating storytelling from the Virgin Islands, Caribbean and beyond and further positioning the BVI as a place where Caribbean stories can be developed, showcased and connected to wider audiences and industry opportunities.

Spotlight on Caribbean Folklore & Fables

In keeping with the festival’s primary focus on Caribbean Folklore & Fables, filmmakers are encouraged to explore stories inspired by folklore, ancestral traditions, cultural memory, and the characters and narratives passed down from one generation to the next. However, the festival remains open to films spanning a broad range of themes and genres.

Film Commissioner Hodge added, “The 284 Excellence Film Festival is not simply about screening films. It is about creating an ecosystem where our filmmakers can develop their craft, see their work on screen, engage with their peers and industry professionals, and recognise that stories originating in the Virgin Islands have a place within the regional and international film landscape.”

The 284 Excellence Film Festival continues the BVI Film Commission’s broader efforts to develop local filmmaking talent, provide avenues for exposure and strengthen the Territory’s growing film industry.

Further announcements regarding the 2026 programme, screenings, special guests, participating filmmakers and festival activities will be released in the coming weeks.
