DUFF’S BOTTOM, Tortola, VI- The BVI Music Festival, which has in the past attracted some big-name international artistes and many visitors to the shores of the Virgin Islands, will make a return in 2023 after a 10-year hiatus.

This is according to Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) during his Budget Address at the Ninth Sitting of the Fourth Session of the Fourth House of Assembly (HoA) at Save the Seed Energy Centre in Duff’s Bottom on November 29, 2022.

“2023 will also see the return of a VI Music Festival to help develop and bolster the tourism sector through the development of entertainment tourism.  Again, this is an effort to provide more value to our product and improve the experience of our visitors while attracting new ones,” Dr Wheatley stated.

The last BVI Music Festival was held in Cane Garden Bay in 2013. There were plans to hold others after 2013 but they fell through.

When the 2014 BVI Music Festival was postponed in 2014, Executive Producer of the event Mr Rhodni A. Skelton had said: “Without significant support from the Government and other sponsors, the event, if continued at CGB, will continue to operate at a loss and cannot be sustainable.”

You clearly have no clue. The event brings money for hotels and restaurants and car rentals and ferries and other activities. Govt makes that money back on departure taxes. Economics. Stop being so short sighted!

Do some math. That would require 12,500 people to recover departure taxes. Music fest ain’t never had that many people, nor can that many people fit in the bay or all of our hotels and yachts combined.

No government funding music fest to send the money needed for development out of the country. Some of those young people do not learn from their mistakes.

And you don’t know nothing about investing in the economy during the slow tourist season. Instead of hotels empty in May now the hotels full with a Music fest. Now they can keep paying staff. Staff can pay their rent and go groceries. Cars will get rent. Restaurant will make money and stay open one extra week when they normally close down. Taxes get paid and that’s how the economy makes money and gov’t makes money back on the investment. We young people know better than you old relics! All VG and Jost be making money when it have the fest. You small minded!

All of these big name acts require the festival pay for all of their expenses, including lodging for them and their entourage. While the Festival bragged that they filled every room on Tortola, it is because they paid for them; more accurately the Government / We The People paid for them.
Stop this senseless spending, fix our roads, fix the incinerator, running water for homes instead of the ghuts and drainage. Start acting like a responsible adult instead of a spoiled brat acting out against perceived oppressors; after all, it was you who made promises to the UK in writing that you would institute the recommendations of the COI. Get back to what you said you would do and stop electioneering!!

That kind of money is peanuts if we want to pull off something close to what St Kitts have...We need a stationary, nice, Central location. I think that plot of land opposit pancake paradise before Pier Park is a nice location.. leasing fencing for music festival. Lots of parking. Or inside where Yomama is. Then again those will be serious issues when it rains, (Sort it out.) Some where in that area should be the home for our new and revived music Festival . Cane garden Bay is too much confusion and greed, and little parking. I even Prefer Trellis Bay, that open lot where the Badge dock, than Cane garden Bay. Festival ground should be reserved for Festival. We need music fest back..

We have a $30mil deficit but still waiting on the government to ante up. If the Music Fest is going to revive the private sector that much then let tyhem put up the funds! Its always the same, let the taxpayer pay so a few people can get richer

The first difficult decision that must be made is the move the Musicfest from Cane Garden Bay. It cannot recoup the funds spent if it is held in that location. It simply cannot. while the ambiance of the Bay is great for photographs, it doe snot make good economic sense. The festival grounds were designated for this sort of affair. It should be used. More central. More parking. Greater opportunity to make back funds. just an overall better location.
