ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Two hundred and twenty-four secondary school students out of two hundred and thirty-one students in the public schools will graduate this year, representing 96% of the public schools' 12th graders.

This was revealed by Mrs Orlandette R. Crabbe, Chief Education Officer, during The Virgin Islands Voice on June 11, 2025.

“That works out to about 7 students who won’t be graduating with their class, and that’s across the Territory.”

Summer School available

For the students who will not graduate together with their classmates and need credit recovery, Summer School is available to them from July 8 to August 1, 2025.

“So, students who need what we call credit recovery, which is because they are failing a class, they can attend Summer School. That’s the same for students who didn’t pass the EPE, whether English or Math, they can also attend Summer School…I think there is one student who did not accumulate enough community service hours, so that individual would have to do that.”

Once these students can pass Summer School, they will receive their school-leaving certificate, Mrs Crabbe said, adding that a second graduation ceremony, however, will not be held for them.

Summer School creates opportunities for students- Hon de Castro

Meanwhile, Minister for Education, Youth Affairs and Sports, Hon Shari B. de Castro, stated that Summer School was reinstated about two years ago after “a very long time”.

“Before the students would have to wait and return to school for the full school year to retake their courses, whether it was one or two, and that in itself provided some challenge and disappointment, and so we thought it best to really create opportunities for Summer School,” she explained.

Hon de Castro also said that while Summer School is available to students who were unsuccessful in 12th grade, it is also available to 11th graders and, in some cases, 10th graders as well.

“So that opportunity really assists students in being able to move on to the next grade level with the content-specific area, based on them potentially being challenged in one subject area.”

Are there enough jobs for all these graduates? I know most might be going off to University but what about those who prefer to take a gap year and work before proceeding to higher Education? Every year, its the same thing and Government isn't learning anything new. Even if you want to create your own employment, most banks will not grant you a loan. So its like a Hamster on a wheel. Poor mankind.

Pretty sure the top performers in that 224 number could comprise, as you put it, "orientals and island people". Ignorance is the best of the majority in this country.

My Two cents to ms. Education Minister when will the unfareness of having our youths graduate without future, because you have individuals retiring from three (3) Government jobs only to put the youths behind. We usted to have Cross training before graduation of Choice, I don't hear about this no more. I know of teachers retiring, Working other Govt deparments only to retire again, policía to immigration to dock máster I can go on. Please put something in for our youths and get your Heart out the cloud

Maybe 24 of them would be lucky to find a job as we are not trained and ready for the jobs in our country, according to the pondits. Not to mention we are all lazy. So clerk typists, receptionists, store clerks, account receivable clerks and the list goes on, all have to be brought in from overseas and their work permit reviewed year after year until they start singing in the choir of I've been here ten years etc. These are entry level jobs. They certainly don't pay for college educated persons. And I will not mention the supermarkets and medium sized stores who are doing the same thing, hiring 100 percent of shelf stackers and delivery persons on work permit. Until we decide for whom we are building this country and deciding to bring them forward with us, we will continue to lose our young people to migration, drugs and other illicit activities. Our Young People are our future. Should they have to compete at this level to work in their country? While at HLSCC, shouldn't there be part time jobs available for our students? We have to embrace them and bring them along. We are not doing right by our youths.

Work means work. Most Employers don't care where a person from, they are doing a business base on value, service aand profit. They are looking not just workers but discipline, respectful and effort driven employees..
