ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- An unrepresented Shadrach Thompson, a 22-year-old native of the Virgin Islands, was remanded into custody when he made his first appearance, today, April 20, 2020, before Magistrate Christilyn Benjamin for robbing the E&B Convenience Store in Palestina Estate, Tortola.

The local man, according to Crown Counsel O’Neal Simpson, together with persons unknown on March 24, 2020, robbed the store of approximately $300 of its earnings.

A gold chain valued $400 was also taken from an employee during the robbery.

Children were also in store

Mr Simpson related that on the day in question, the owner and his family, including his young grandchildren, were inside the store, along with two employees, when the armed men wearing dark clothing entered the store.

Upon entering the store, the first robber headed to the counter and aimed a firearm at the employee while demanding cash.

The employee opened the cash register and stood back while the robber helped himself by filling his pockets with the cash.

The second robber followed the second employee to the back of the store, and pointed the firearm in his direction and snatched a gold chain he was wearing.

He then went to the back of the store where the office is located and upon realising the door was closed he joined his accomplice at the checkout counter.

Unknowing to him, the owner had locked the door to protect his family who were inside the office.

Crime caught on camera

When the second robber went to the checkout counter, he used the glove to wipe the area where the first robber had come into contact.

During the investigation, police were able to lift latex fingerprints off the surface of the store and it was later matched to the accused who provided his fingerprints to police during an interview.

Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) footage was also extracted and police were able to see what happened.

As a result of the findings, Thompson was asked to conduct a third interview, and he agreed. During the interview, he was informed of the findings but maintained he was not involved.

He was then charged for the offence before the court.

Bail refused

According to the prosecution, the defendant has no previous antecedents; however, because of the type of matter, and the ongoing investigation, bail was denied.

Mr Thompson is to return to court on May 28, 2020, for Paper Committal.

The matter is heading to the high court for trial.

Lock um up. People work hard to establish their own business and trying to provide foe their family and this is the kind of crap these criminals want to do. They want to rob what is YOURS....What bothers me is the amount of illegal firearms that has made its way into this small island and to be honest, the court tend to be very slack/easy on them.

these punks need to be placed in wheelchairs after removing their fingers not all of the fingers 4 or 5 of them & dislocating their hip:::this is an intentional act because they try to clean off the surface to remove finger print: I personally see jail time to be a waste of tax payers money I prefer to pay for intensive care where someone have to spoon feed these MOFOS and each time they look in a mirror cause them to realize I can no longer live a normal life because of my criminal conduct...jail time is to good for anyone using a firearm during a crime hospital time is better might cost more but it send a better message

Remember we don't display pictures of local pictures of anyone who is a "local" unless his parents are from outside the territory.

This guy went to my school. I remember watching his mother struggle to provide. Please look into this...poverty, failure of school system etc. Unless we break certain cycles sadly this will continue to happen.

I know him too. His mother may not have been rich but his basic needs were supplied. The boy is lazy and spoiled, hence his choice to steal rather than to work. This is the second time that he has gotten himself caught up in this drama.
