ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- 2031 has been proposed as the year the Virgin Islands will have a referendum to determine whether to change its current status of being a colony of Britain to one that gives more autonomy.

This was disclosed by Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) when asked whether there is a fixed future date for a referendum on the change of political status of the Virgin Islands.

"The House of Assembly dealt with that when we were in Committee discussing the Report of the Constitutional Review Commission. That will be in the report [that is] forthcoming.

"But if memory serves me correctly, we did propose for that date to be in 2031," Premier Wheatley stated at a press conference on November 18, 2025.

Premier Wheatley also said the Report of the UN C24 Mission used the word "independence"; however, it is recognised that the Virgin Islands has different options, and that independence is just one of them.

"What I would prefer to say is that we should set a timetable for a change of political status."

Can you stop bleating on about how UK stopping us getting Independence now.

It is you holding us back from Self Determination. Why we waiting until 2031.

The UK been ready. The UK been ready. You keep on with your disrespectful trash about the UK and now you not letting the VI people have their voice until 2031?

    What is this deception.

At least you have finally woken up to the realisation that the UN resolution was never about Independence but about choice. Our right to decide (not yours).

    Self determination.

Self determination you have decided to deny until 2031.

UK Ready. UN Ready. VI people ready. P487 not ready. HOA13 Not Ready.

Denied by P487 and HOA who keep trash talking UK saying they are holding us back

It is time. VI people to self determine.

Look at Andrew, when last any of us seen or heard from him!! NO one in his immediate family did not even have the decency to issue an apology to this country. And he has immediate family here walking around shamelessly everyday.

what happens if the British government decide to grant independence before that date. It is possible . given the current situation globally. BVI need to put things in place now. consult with their caribbean neighbours about their experience . drafting new constitution and what to look out for since the COLONIALIST NEVER HAVE YOUR INTEREST at heart. Establish a committee include a few CONSTITUTIONAL LAWYERS.

Tortola cannot survive if it becomes an independent country. We done can't get the roads fix, cannot get water 24hrs a day and food cost and house rent will only go higher. Only the rich will survive, and we will end up just like Haiti and other countries around the world.

Does the general public genuinely feel like Independence is the right move? From what I can see its simply a small minority of people who want it that would directly benefit.

But what about the average working person in the community? I can't name a single Caribbean nation that went independent and the average working person became better off 10 years later.

Only the politicians want Independence so they don't have someone looking over their shoulder when they keep putting their hands in the cookie jar. Nonsense.

Stop frustrating yourselves every our Premier suggestion people. He is basically proposing 2031 in order to get our, or best yet, responce. It is called "mind games" or gimmicks. That's it.
However, owing to the level of mistrust, and unacceptabilities not been nor being, known yes by them, the Cabinet leaders, why should we follow blindly leaders that have put their own, and special interest friends, and supporters overwhelmingly before our own, them being only stewards of our financial management team.

Independence from the UK is a highly complex issue. Politically, we being the majority in numbers, and the BVI our birthplace do not give us any international recognized right to force the UK to accept our independence desire. The UK Nation has Vito rights, so to speak on this topic issue. Great autonomy is within our reach, but not before our local political leaders self engraved it in their mind by action, that our finances must first be used in our best interest, not for theirs, and their mind-picked greedyminded supporters only.

Note: 1.) I was made to understand that Hon. Myron Walwyn birthplace is Tortola, British virgin Islanders

Note 2.) I was made to understand that our current Hon.Premier birthplace was not Tortola British Virgin Islands. Are you the five-year plan man? Deal with the issues on hand as needed.

Clearly, there is no urgency in even holding a self-determination referendum. WTF!! 2031 is 6 long years away. What is the frigging hold up? What is the tall pole in the tent? What is the guarantee that 2031 is a firm fixed date? Is the 2031 referendum date binding on successive governments? Will independence be the only self- determination option on the referendum? And if no, what are the other options? Did Bermuda take this long to prepare for their August 1995 referendum on independence? Government has a documented record of overpromising and underdelivering, eg, the promise referendum on same-sex marriage, talking the talk but not walking the walk. The referendum date needs to compressed, let’s get it on, so regardless of the decision the focus on the way forward can continue. Delaying the referendum, adds uncertainty into the decision planning. Why are we conducting this analysis into paralysis?

Just sharing some experience. When the premier and his team visit london for independence talks, that will be discussed. Of course he has to be prepared to to defend the people with British passports. in previous years they insist that on the date of independance only those people who are on British soil will retain that status. i KNOW OF CASES WHERE PEOPLE DESIROUS OF KEEPING THEIR STATUS HAD TO TRAVEL FOR VACATION TO ENGLAND AND STAY UNTIL INDEPENDENCE DAY HAD PASSED. THEN RETURN AFTER INDEPENDANCE. This is why the primere need to consult with other former coloniesthat got independance from the British.
