WICKHAM’S CAY II, Tortola, VI- The 2026 Industry Team emerged winner of the 2026 Great Debate over the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC).

The debate organised by the BVI Finance was held on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, as part of Financial Services Week. 

The team debated on the moot ‘In today's geopolitically fragmented world, should international finance centres continue to position themselves as neutral facilitators of cross-border trade and finance?’.

A fierce battle

BVI Finance, in a press release, described the debate as a “fierce battle” where the teams examined the practical implications of neutrality for IFCs in today’s geopolitical climate. 

The Industry Team was made up of A. Gabriel Adedeji of Bedell Cristin, Daire O’Herlihy and LeRon J. Hunte-St. Rose of Conyers, while Adrianne Thomas, Auri-Ana El Shabazz, and Jana Peters represented the HLSCC. 

Daire O’Herlihy and Auri-Ana El Shabazz shared the Best Speaker Award. 

The Great Debate was sponsored by the BVI Bar Association, BVI International Arbitration Centre, PROVEN Bank, National Bank of the Virgin Islands, HLSCC, and The Virgin Islands Association of Registered Agents. 

The judges were Acting Director of International Affairs Ms Dwynel Davis, Governance Reform Delivery Manager Mr Kedrick E. Malone, and CEO of the BVI International Arbitration Centre, Shan Greer. 

The evening concluded with a panel discussion with Cristiane Matos, TEP and Jennifer A. Potter, moderated by Michele Hibbert on the topic ‘Neutrality in a Fragmented World: Can IFCs Maintain the Middle Ground?’. 

Financial Services Week of activities continue today, Friday, March 6, 2026, with a Secondary School visit on Virgin Gorda. Activities conclude tomorrow, Saturday, March 7, 2026, with the Financial Services Week Nature Hike to Mount Alma.
