ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- After a full day of debate yesterday, December 14, 2020, when the bill was also sent through Committee, the Appropriation 2021 Act, 2020 was passed with amendments in the House of Assembly (HoA) around noon today, December 15, 2020.

It was on December 12, 2020, that Premier Fahie announced a national budget for 2021 of $402,123,046 for the Virgin Islands.

The budget address was made under the theme, ‘INNOVATION: Building a stable, diverse, competitive economy with strong industries and partnerships for regional and international trade, by building and harnessing the creative capacity of our human capital’.

The bill was put to a vote and all 7 of the members present, including one Opposition Member, Hon Julian Fraser (RA), voted for the bill's passage.

'Budget committed to God'

Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) highlighted that it was the third budget passed in the House of Assembly in 22 months by the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) Government, noting that the last two were passed within the time frame.

The tardiness of the first budget being passed under the current administration was due to the now ousted National Democratic Party (NDP) failing to bring the Appropriation Act for 2019 to the House in a timely manner.

“We commit this budget to God, that it will be assented to,” Premier Fahie said today.

More details to follow.
