20-year sentences for RT station attackers!

Meade (left) and George, who had pleaded guilty to the Road Town Police Station attack of 2010, were both sentenced to 20 years in prison this morning July 23, 2012. Their accomplice Kareem Simon, who pleaded guilty last year, is already serving an eight year sentence. Photo: VINO/file
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – This morning, July 23, 2012, Ramon George and Courtney Meade were sentenced to 20 years each imprisonment for their role in the November 24, 2010 Road Town Police Station attack.

Meade had pleaded guilty on May 8, 2012 to aggravated burglary while George had pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary and carrying an unlicensed firearm.

Handing down the sentence this morning in the High Court, Justice Albert Redhead described the attack as a bold and daring one and told Mr. George, “You embarked on a very serious and dangerous mission on the night in question you raided the police station in Road Town, masked and armed with weapon, this showed to me you have no regard to authority… you literally compromise the security of this country.”

Speaking to Mr. Meade, the Judge said, “Ýou are a talented musician, and could have earned a livelihood by that.”

Meanwhile, Gerard Huggins, who was facing alleged charges in connection with the attack, was freed after his trial came to an abrupt end following a no-case submission by his lawyer on May 16, 2012.

Before dismissing the case Justice Albert Redhead had lamented that the trial was a waste of time and resources and chastised Crown Counsel Sarah Benjamin for that. Huggins was allegedly fingered as the getaway driver in the attack.

Kareem Simon, who had pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary last year, was given an eight year prison term by Justice Rita Joseph-Olivetti on April 3, 2012.

The evidence, according to the Crown, showed the three men entering the police station masked, wearing gloves, armed, had several plastic handcuffs among other things. It is alleged that they had a hand drawn map, as they made their way to the guard room where they dislocated a CCTV camera and assaulted PC Kevin Prince. The officer was allegedly struck in his head by one of the attackers and hit in his abdomen by another.

The men, who were armed with a glock, a crow bar and a knife, were caught disarmed, unmasked and taken into custody, the crown had stated.

The eight year sentence is more in line with a guilty plea. The 20-year will be considered excessive by the Court of Appeal. Not for a guilty plea which saves time and money. Little wonder people take their chances with the jury because one ought to be given a discount of 1/3 after pleading guilty. When the maximum is life imprisonment reserved for the "worst of the worst" the notional starting point ia about 13 - 1/3 is deducted for a guilty plea leaving a range of between 8-12 years depnding on aggravating and mitigating factors. Poor Justice Redhead. He got in wrong. I dont have to be a judge to work this out but I am a sound lawyer. A good case for appeal.

They all pleaded guilty. Redhead ditched out 20 years. Olivetti -8 years. This is called CONSISTENCY in sentences. LMAO. Redhead is here for a short time so he is doing anything before he goes. But Let's wait for the appeal before you all start applauding what Redhead is doing. He who laughs last laughs best. The sentences of 20 years is unduly excessive
