20 students achieve St George’s Sec. inaugural Honour Roll
Principal of the St George’s Secondary School, Mrs Beverley Hinds-Callwood related that the school did not previously have an Honour Roll in place and said it is now her role to put some structural things in place and one of those is giving the students incentives to do better. She also noted that after having taught the previous academic year at the school as a Biology and Science teacher, she recognised the importance of the need for such an incentive.
“Part of my vision was to have the Honour Roll,” expressed Mrs Hinds-Callwood, “for students who have achieved an average of a B+ and higher… and so this morning we had our first Honour Roll in St George’s School Secondary division history.”
The B+ represents an average of 78 per cent over all when all the subjects taken by the students are combined. The students who made the school’s Honour Roll represent just about one fifth of the population of the school which has a total population of just over 110 students. One student missed the cut off mark by 0.7 percentage points.
Two students also made the Principal’s list for scoring 90 per cent and above as well. These students are Emmanuel Brokinni with 91% and Chris-Tian Roberts with 91.5%.
Mrs Hinds-Callwood expressed that she was particularly pleased that as many as 4 boys in the first form made the Honour Roll.
The school has now been in existence for eight years and this is the first school year that Mrs Hinds-Callwood has served as Principal.
Akeem Johnson, a former student of the school, served as guest speaker for the students today and this served as a confidence booster for them, said Mrs. Hinds-Callwood.
Young Jessica Smith expressed that she was ‘grateful and thankful’ to be on the Honour Roll; she was also shocked to have been selected after having done her own calculations at home and discovering that she would have made it on the prestigious list.
She also felt that everyone did their best in attempting to achieve good grades and added that she had to work harder at Math and Science since these were her weaker subjects.
Jessica said she read much more than she normally would, especially in the area of science, so she had a better understanding of what was taught in class during the day.
Principal Hinds-Callwood also related that the school recently re-instituted its Student Council. “We find that that is going to help to bolster confidence and responsibility in the students as well as hone their leadership skills.”
