CARROT BAY, Tortola, VI- Two persons were taken to Dr D. Orlando Smith Hospital following a lone-vehicle accident in Carrot Bay around 8:00 AM this morning, October 19, 2023.

According to reports reaching our news centre, the driver of the vehicle lost control while descending a hill covered with mud due to overnight rain.

The vehicle went off the side of an adjacent road some 10 feet down but was held from going further down by vegetation.

Our newsroom was told the injured are a mother and her adult son.

They were said to be responsive when pulled from the vehicle by public spirited citizens who were quick to respond following the accident.

Both ambulance and fire services were on the scene.

Junior Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries Dr the Honourable Karl Dawson (R1) also visited the scene and was seen speaking with persons concerning the state of the roadway where the accident occurred.

A storm passed and left tonns of debris on the roads and it is still there. Another storm is coming and we have done NOTHING to prepare and safeguard the public. Road Town had soo much dirt on the side of the road that if a drizzle comes the drains will be blocked with mud. Yet politicians will get on the radio and talk sh** but we must be prepared and we must do better. same BS every storm or hard rain. why do we have a public works department if they do not function? Just like Police cant respond because they got no working vehicles. We becoming too complacent with/about these things. Time to turn things around and really fix the root cause of these issues.

Time will tell but the mud and wash isn’t the only issue. The roads here have been built with no consideration for camber or gradient or surface traction, margins or sight lines, which makes them dangerous even when there is no mud, water or pot holes.

until the roads dry out before driving. All Tortola inclined roads are slippery now with all the mud, dirt, debris, etc. from TS Philippe 2 weeks ago.

Don't know who's to blame but thank those trees without them stopping the vehicle it would have been a lot worse. Mother nature to the rescue.

As a concerned citizen, I drive-by the Elmo Stoutt High School every morning. I understand the tent cover blew off during the recent weather event. Question is, what is the plan to secure shade for the children? Is there even a thought about the urgency to cover and provide shade for the children/faculty? Not all kids are bad, some just need some guidance and perhaps, just an opportunity to have a conversation. You will be surprised what you find out and why some act out. Don't punish to kids, get the tent covered without haste. But wait, another weather event is coming. But, please, get the tent covered to whoever has responsibility to get it done.
