1st District to host summer B/Ball, Athletics camp

Speaking to Virgin Islands News Online today July 9, 2014, committee member Gloria A. Fahie said that the basketball camp will be held at the Benjamin Romney Park in West End. The camp begins on July 14, 2014 and runs for two weeks. Sessions will be conducted by Karl Scatliffe and his team.
According to Fahie, all children from the First District will be allowed in free of cost while children from outside the First District will be charged a fee of $20.
“At the end of the camp there will be an exhibition game by over 40 players and by children ages 13 to 15. The children who took part in the summer camp will also be demonstrating their skills,” she said.
Fahie noted that the District will also be having a track and field camp from August 11 to 21, 2014 and this will be held on the Capoon’s Bay Ground. This, she said, will be for children ages 7 to 17 also.
She said also that from August 1, 2014 Hon Andrew A. Fahie will be holding motivational sessions for children so as to get them fired up for their return to school with a positive outlook following the summer break.
“This is something we have been doing for a very long time. The youths are being attacked by adverse elements in the society. This is a way that we are trying to keep them away from negativity and to have positive influences in their lives,” she said.
“We have ten slots already allocated in the Youth Empowerment Programme (YEP) and are providing transportation for the children to and from the activities. We also run a bus programme in the First District where we provide late night transport for girls especially so that they won’t be preyed upon by sexual predators,” Fahie said.
