CARROT BAY, Tortola, VI- Local singers performing a range of genres will highlight the first edition of Cultural Thursdays at Carrot Bay for the new year tomorrow, January 4, 2024.

Performances will highlight the talented residents of the First District featuring gospel, reggae, and country and western, reflecting the music enjoyed in the islands through the years.

Two local carolling groups will also perform as they close the Christmas season and celebrate the new year, a press release from First District Representative and Junior Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries Dr the Hon Karl Dawson stated today, January 3, 2024.

Who will be performing?

Committee President Monica Howson stated they were pleased to have a selection of artists such as Gia Frazer, Nyamekye J.S. Donovan, Ravenna, Jalena, Ice of JTM and others on the lineup.

She indicated that she was especially thrilled that the Band of Love from West End and the Carrot Bay Carollers have agreed to perform, as they represent the deep cultural tradition of house-to-house serenading at Christmastime.

There will also be an open mic opportunity for those in attendance who would like to perform an item.

The event begins at 3:00 PM and will showcase a variety of cultural food and drinks, fresh fish, fruits, and vegetables, as well as craft items.

Singing performances will begin at 6:00 PM.

Cultural Thursdays is a production of the First District Community and Representative Dr the Hon Karl Dawson and supported by local businesses such as Villa of Tortola.

This is so good to see. Would be great if some of the other villages could do something similar with their own local traditions, food, stories, music, crafts, even if once or twice a year. Keep it alive.

Nah, it takes a decent committee of people to realize that it is better to give community members opportunities to make money honestly rather than doling out district funds to a select few like it is the rep's personal money. But think whatever you want to think...

So their missing hand outs/minister’s donations triggered these events? I am ashamed of the people from the district if they could not think on ways to earn a living without depending on politicians.

The government took something nice and charge the vendors alot of money for one day. This is all about the wicked government. They only here to make more money off you dumb sheep. It went from free with lots of people to a money making business for the government ONLY. The vendors are complaining that they ain't making money. The last time didn't have not much people on the street or around. All the money government robbing from us they should be giving us free food and drinks because it's tax payers money anyways. Why do we have to ask for money from the government. They should be giving out checks to everyone for the holidays. We the people don't get any of the money they thief
