19th HLSCC Race Series Sets Records

A mammoth turnout of over 250 runners and walkers took the streets of Paraquita Bay in race 1 of the College Series.
Collectively, participants from as young as 3 years to 65 years old embraced the occasion with determined hearts to the finish. New beginnings at the finish line with Samantha John in a time of 13:23.77 topped it for the ladies, with the 2012 co-champion Tarika Moses only a few seconds behind. Katrina Crumpler took third place with Rosmond Johnson as fourth.
In a time of 11 minutes 59.13 seconds three-peat, overall winner Khirey Creque, pushed through the finish first with Tarique Moses at his heals. Khoy Vanterpool and James Carr took third and fourth places respectively.
Young Sam Potgieter the 2013 co-champion is leaning towards a two-peat for the under nine one mile category after placing first for the boys in a time of 7 minutes 43.66 seconds. He was trailed by Johari Lacey, and new comer Latriel Williams. Asia McMaster, is filling her sister Akeela's shoes in hopes of being the next girl one-mile champion. She placed first in race one, followed by Katherine Jones in second and Amia Wheatley in third place.
In the cross country primary division, Althea Scatliffe Team-1 had an impressive finish taking four of the top five spots, but all behind Derek Pettigrew of Cedar International. As a result, Althea Scatliffe placed first, Francis Lettsome Team-2 took second place with Cedar International Team placing third overall in the primary division.
In the community partners division Team Cedar School PTA (2009-2012 champs) fielded two teams which took the first and second places with team HLSCC placing third. Cedar Secondary with its strong contingent continues into another year keeping that division alive while the Rotary Club of Tortola remains undefeated under the service clubs category, despite the energy of the new opponents from the Interact Club.
Next Saturday October 4, 2014 the series returns to Virgin Gorda where HLSCC will join the Virgin Gorda branch of the BVI Cancer Society as they walk/run in awareness of childhood cancers. On this day, the race will have an earlier than normal start at 6:30 a.m. with a registration fee of $5.00 for adults.
