ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- At one point the number of persons on quarantine had reduced from more than a hundred to five; however, now close to 200 persons are in quarantine following two more confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Virgin Islands (VI).

There is only one active case of COVID-19 in the VI since 3 patients have been cleared by the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) as actively recovered, while a 4th case has since died but someone who was in contact with the deceased person has tested positive.

“One hundred [and] eighty-one persons are currently in quarantine and the active case is currently isolated in the Dr. D. Orlando Smith Hospital,” Deputy Premier and Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon Carvin Malone (AL) told the Territory in a live update last evening, Sunday, April 19, 2020.

He said the health surveillance teams continue to conduct screening and monitoring in order to detect any active cases of the disease that may not have been detected to date and anyone experiencing a fever with cough or difficulty breathing is encouraged again to call the Medical Hotline at 852-7650.

“It bears repeating what we already know about COVID-19. We know that COVID-19 spreads fast, and we know that it is deadly. We know that the virus can spread more easily in crowded environments. And we know that prevention is the most effective weapon against this unseen enemy,” Hon Malone stated.

Ok - 5 cases less 3 recovered less one pass = 1 active

It’s good to restate the symptoms (fever, cough, shortness of breath/difficulty breathing) and the number for people to call if they are experiencing symptoms, but it’s also necessary to use precise language when reporting about Covid-19. Please distinguish between “confirmed” (by testing) cases, and “suspected” (by symptoms) cases. And remember that there may well be “active” cases on island that may not have been confirmed or are are not suspected because people are not reporting their symptoms if they are mild.
Folks are tired of quarantine and scared of the illness, understandably. But it’s so important to report symptoms and get tested and do all you can to curb the spread of this disease.

Why were the 181 quarantine? How long will they be in quarantine? And are they going to be tested? If so, when since some cases can be a symptomatic? What really are the procedures? We cannot afford to operate blindly. BVI has a number of vulnerable elderly folks.

Begging for information - we don’t want to be drop fed. This piece piece movement not working. What is the three to six month strategy?

So if that poor Lady contracted the virus from an "overseas source" that means she must have contracted the virus before 22nd March (when BVI shut down the ports) That is along time ago and she must have been very sick for way more than a week before she was eventually hospitalised.
    Worrying and very sad !

Does someone want to tell him the entire BVI is in quarantine / lockdown. What is this crazy government doing ? They’ve got this all screwed up.

Oh and can’t get through to Riteway or OneMart. Either by phone or online

Even with this situation we should not have to go back into lockdown after this week everything on the inside nothing is coming in everything on the inside should have already been worked out by the end of this week requesting that the government work it out

What is the difference between those 181 in quarantine and the other 25,000 of us under lockdown?

They get free virus testing and food brought to them for nothing. Andrew you’ve screwed this up. It’s a disaster now

    @really.
how can you say hes screwed this up. do you have any idea of where we would be if we hadnt been in lockdown. There are STILL people out there who are breaking the lockdown and putting us all at risk. those who are in quarantine are under watch...they have been taken out of circulation and have no way of getting out and spreading this. if those fools who break lockdown for their own selfish reasons would wake up...then our lockdown would not need to keep extending. sadly some people cant be trusted. dont blame the Premier he and his team are doing everything they can to keep us all safe...it is those selfish amongst us that are causing this hardship. If you have any good constructive sugvestions on how to deal with this then lets hear them...but dont blame the Premier and his team for doing their absolute very best to protect us all. If you look down and only see one pair of footprints in the sand where once there were two you will realize what is happening right now. stay safe

So, let's relax and pray. COVID19 Storm is in the BVI. We are smart people, we know going out in a hurricane is a death sentence. The absolute best place to be right now is home. Please think about it. We are always on about guys racing around on motorbike with no helmets. We are tired of them dying in crashes. We wish they could be more sensible. Now all of us adults need to be sensible and responsible. We know Peebles is not really where want to end up with COVID19. Hungry, frustrated, bored, broke, worried, nagging hungry kids, hungry dog, what seriously for want will you expose yourself to this horrific storm COVID19? Please let's all relax and pray. If you go out in the COVID19 Storm you can bring it inside your home. 6 days more. We can do this, BVI! Cuz we are Different!

  • Here is the problem (21/04/2020, 07:52) Like (0) Dislike (1) Reply
So we are in lock down and everyone is running out of food and medicine.
Our Goverment is trying to protect us but creating other health issues with stress and most importantly damaged immune systems.
As the C-19 VIRUS is investigated and the world press has a new theory every day the one constant that is always there is your immune system, eat right, exercise the most effective tool to fight the C-19 that everyone can use, participate in and for Gov to support.
Our problem is to avoid mass gaverings or groups of people, being locked down serves no one in the long term, we need to devise a system to go from lockdown to controlled, once we are in the controlled the police can then enforce education and getting communities to respect the stay at home, shops like supermarkets, pharmacies etc need to be encouraged to stay open more than 12 hrs a day so people can shop without crowds. The supermarkets cannot supply a yo-yo economy, they need to establish steady budgeted supply chains, not 5 containers this week and nothing next week as the supermarkets then struggle with their employees as everyone needs to be in at the same time.
We need to slow down our approach to the day, spread out the work force allow people to build their immune systems and have the police to stop the shellfish few who will try to break the rules.
At present you are creating a them and us society that will do more harm, make us work together, come out with extended hrs for essential businesses, allow people to buy their own food, exercise, but the rule is stay at home. look after those who have been laid off and are stuck, slowly bring the economy back online while enforcing strict distancing rules.
Gov stop thinking of your re election, donot allow barber shops or nail salons or beauty parlors to open in the first wave... they are vain businesses not essential businesses.. Your chances for re election should not be a consideration.
Another suggestion is to close certain roads that will restrict how people move round the island and make it easy for the police to monitor.
Remember this virus is impossible to fight, you cannot win, as soon as you drop your guard it will pounce. We need to slow the movement of people allow the people to be strong and happy, build up strong immune systems. Manage stress levels put us on a level plan that slows our movements down and avoids crowds.
The supply of gloves and masks needs to be improved so the private sector or even your employees are protected.
We need to be doing testing, not only those that show symptoms but across the whole population.
The most important tool is our immune system..... make that strong.... allow us to work with everyone to get through this mess.. together... strong
