BURT POINT, Tortola, VI- The Government of the Virgin Islands is putting its money where its mouth is, regarding the inoperable wastewater treatment plant at Burt Point.

In his statement at the Second Sitting of the First Session of the Fifth House of Assembly, Minister for Communication and Works Honourable Kye M. Rymer (R5) on June 29, 2023, said that recommissioning the wastewater treatment plant is a priority for his ministry due to the fact that the inoperable facility currently poses a threat to the marine environment.

And, according to a press release from Government Information Services (GIS) on July 5, 2023, the Ministry of Communication and Works is making moves to recommission and upgrade the previously inoperable wastewater treatment plant and it will cost some $1.7M.

Honourable Rymer went on to say that pump trucks will soon be able to pump wastewater at the Burt Point waste water treatment plant, which will eliminate the need for the trucks to do so at the Road Town station.

He said, “As part of the repairs and commissioning of the plant, we have incorporated a receiving station to allow the sewage pump trucks to dump at the Burt Point plant. This will eliminate the need for the pump trucks to continue to dump sewage in the heart of Road Town at the main pump station at the Roundabout.”

Minister Rymer continued, “As we seek to improve our city of Road Town, we have to put measures in place to enhance our aesthetics and the way that we operate, including at our pump station. Having these types of operations relocated to the soon-to-be commissioned plant at Burt Point will allow for monitoring and logging of pump trucks while avoiding the site of sewage being dumped in plain sight of tourists and residents alike.”

Plant to be commissioned in August 2023

Honourable Rymer also noted that a total of one million, seven hundred and thirty-four thousand, three hundred and twenty-one dollars and seventy-seven cents ($1,734,321.77) has been expended on the two million, five hundred ninety-four thousand, three hundred seventeen dollars and eighty-six cent ($2,594,317.86) agreement between the Government of the Virgin Islands via the Ministry of Communications and Works with BiWater International Limited.

The Minister for Works also stated that his ministry has engaged BiWater International Ltd. to procure the necessary equipment and material to replace the damaged equipment and material at the plant and indicated that the plant is anticipated to be completed and commissioned in August 2023.

So untreated sewage is discharged into Drake's Channel off Burt point since Sept. 2017. The desalinization plants in Sea Cows Bay and Nanny Cay suck sea water from Drake's Channel less then a nautical mile from this sewage discharge. Hopefully what is going OUT is not returning IN the fresh water produced in these RO plants!

Thank you for posting the good and bad work of the government and also allowing the same for the blogs. However, please post more stories of the Governor and allow the same because the one bias online site is working with him to post a lot of his stories and only what he says so they can work with him to try to poison our minds against our leaders and the people of the BVI to believe we can do nothing good and he & the UK officials alone have all the answers and can save us although they are doing poorly in the UK as crime and the economy are at all time worse. To make matters worse they are blocking ALL blogs from being posted that do not agree with him and what he & the UK is doing and only allowing the few ignorant persons as well as their assigned UK PR team blogs that are in his favor to be posted to try to brainwash us to believe him and try to justify their evil plot to try to unjustifiably take over. VINO, please pay attention to what they are doing and bring balance now because the majority do not support the Governor and his UK officials plot & strategy but the other online site is working with them to try to make it seem so. VINO RESUCE US PLEASE!!!

I would love to know who's idea it was to place the sewage pumping station in the center of town in the first place? The lack of common sense in city planning is mind boggling! I mean someone actually thought this was a smart idea????

1.7 million is an absolute rape of the taxpayer. The plant could have been restarted years ago but the local knowledge does not exist. The parts needed now in NO WAY approach that money. More BVI. Bs ..
