ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Overcast conditions yesterday, October 30, 2024, proved to be the perfect conditions for the launch of the highly anticipated 2024 BDO Schools League, as the hundreds of school children, donning their uniforms and displaying banners, marched along Waterfront Drive to A.O. Shirley Recreation Grounds.

‘Football is a team sport’- BVIFA President

President of the BVI Football Association (BVIFA) Mr Avanell Morton remarked that the BDO League has been the foundation of the football programme in the VI since 2010, and that many of the current national players have come through the league.

He said the BVIFA is proud to make “a positive impact and meaningful contribution to society, where we continue to work as a team, develop teachers, our young players, our national pride.”

Mr Morton, apart from hailing main sponsor and “backbone of the schools’ league, BDO, announced that the 2024 BDO Schools League will be powered by CCT and 284 Media.

The BVIFA President encouraged the schools to play as a team, since football is a team sport.

‘It’s not just about winning’- Ryan R. E. Geluk

Mr Ryan R.E. Geluk, Managing Director of sponsor BDO, said it is the time of the year that he looks forward to. “All the students here and all the players in their uniform, it looks like a nice bright colourful rainbow.”

Mr Geluk said BDO was extremely proud once again to be the title sponsor for the Schools Football League.

He also reminded that football is a team sport and which also promotes exercise, and making quick decisions. “It teaches you how to work together…and most importantly it’s not just about winning but it’s going there having fun and doing your best.”

CCT/284 Media ‘impressed’- R. Averad Penn

Chief Executive Officer of CCT Mr Romney Averad Penn said CCT and 284 media were happy to come on board as a platinum sponsor this year and that they have been “watching the development of this programme over the last couple of years and we have been really impressed with what has been done with the children.

“I am really proud of what all the children have brought to this programme,” Mr Penn said.

Following the brief opening ceremony, the children were treated to a game between Tortola females and Virgin Gorda females. Virgin Gorda thrillingly came from 2-nil down to win 3-2.

It is unclear at this time when action will get underway in the BDO Schools League, as the BVIFA had not responded to our queries up to the time of publication.
