13-year-old Azariah George sets VI's first Women's 5000m National Record
Virgin Gorda's Azariah George completed the 12 and a half laps around the Mondo Track at A. O. Shirley Grounds in a time of 25.44.06 at the Dag Samuels Development Meet #8 on Saturday, May 9, 2026.
The 5000m event, which attracted a field of 6 (4 women and 2 men), is usually run as a road race throughout the season; however, in an effort to properly establish a title holder, the BVI Athletic Association (BVIAA) hosted the 5000m on the track as a featured race.
Powerful run
It was an exciting event with the crowd fully engaged in every lap.
According to a post by BVI Runners, Azariah started and finished well, maintaining her speed and her composure throughout the laps. By default, she now also holds the Youth National Title.
This was a bold and powerful run for the 13-year-old, who didn't appear to be overly exhausted after her run. Proudly representing the Bladerz Track Club, Azariah noted that after lap 3, she knew she would possibly win the title.
Interestingly, the male National Record established in 1997 was set by a Virgin Gordian, Anderson Legair (15:22).
