ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The Virgin Islands, which currently has over 1200 active COVID-19 cases, has been declared to be in an advanced state of community spread.

This is according to Acting Chief Medical Officer Dr Ronald E. Georges in a COVID-19 update minutes ago, July 11, 2021.

Advanced community spread

“The BVI is now in a situation of advanced community spread. As of the 10th of July 2021, a total of 5692 tests were done over the period 3rd July to 9th July and returned a total of 989 positive results. This brings the total number of positives to 1147 [active cases] as of the 10th of July 2021.

“Today we have 149 additional positive results from the 9th of July and those have so far been reported with 111 samples left to be reported on.”

More new cases expected

Dr Georges added that the trend in increasing daily reports of new cases reported appears to have stabilised; however, a large number of new cases is expected to continue to be reported for several days.

“We expect that the momentum and increase of new cases will continue for a few more days based on previous exposures.”

All at risk!

The VI being in an advanced state of community transmission, according to Dr Georges, means that all persons are presently at risk of contracting COVID-19.

He said geographical distribution and contact tracing “are irrelevant at this point” because we are in a situation of very high transmission and community spread throughout the territory.

“This means that all persons must simply take urgent and immediate to limit their exposure to stop the spread of the virus. Testing is less important at this time. It is less important to strict adherence to strict health measures and getting vaccinated,” Dr Georges stated.

Lock down the place for at least 2 week, that will help to stop spread the virus.
I really don't know what the government is waiting for.

Then what? We contain it for a short while... open up again and BOOM... it’s back! COVID isn’t going away and we can’t close our borders forever. People need to stop listening to nonsense and VACCINATE. A lockdown would be a very short term fix for a long term issue.

Then what? ...people with the covid will recovered at home without infecting others so that will stop the spread.

You clearly did not read the comment. Yes it would stop the spread FOR NOW. But when the lockdown is finished it would be back - your suggestion gives no long term solution. The only long term solutions we have are to vaccinate, to allow this to run rampant through our territory, or to shut our borders for YEARS whilst the rest of the world eradicates the virus.... the only plausible option is the vaccine. If our people are unwilling to take it we must go with option 2.

The lockdown will curb the transmission. We need to have it controlled as we revisit the manner in which our borders are opened given that this is why we are in the situation that we are in vaccinated and non vaccinated are still at risk. The BVI has many persons with chronic illnesses so even though they may be vaccinated the risk is still high. We have to think about our love for eachother, it could be a brother sister son or daughter so we need not think selfishly in these times. Let our agape love protect our people and country.

@T Exactly, but also with the country on lockdown it also meant a decrease in testing. Less testing means less cases identified. Many who were positive were at home recovering, whether they knew they had the virus or not. I would like to know whether St. Vincent kept up the same level of testing before and after the lock down.

The vaccine is not a cure yes it offers protection and how long can this protection last what are the side effects of the vaccine. This is an expirement vaccine use for emergency purposes Why are you not addressing the side effects on this vaccine. I am not against the vaccine but there are people getting sick from it. Women experiencing long mensural period, blood clots, and fever. What should they do after taking the vaccine and side effects occurs. Our bodies are not the same, there are different blood types. There are a lot of issues that need to be address.
vaccinated and unvaccinated we all need to remember this has to be your choice. Not the choice of your employer, labour or the government. As long as this vaccine is still under expirement every body talking it is under observation. Scientist have no clue of the long run side effects. So you take it at your own risk. Yes it offers protection and limits the spread of the virus. As long as you are still a carrier you can affect your children, household and community. The protocols should never change either for vaccinated and unvaccinated it should remain the same. I want to advised my bvi people boost your immune systems daily and this should be added to the protocol. To the government do not put any law in place to force people to take vaccine instead give them option of other choice of vaccine or let them follow the protocols. And employers do not ask your employees to take it or do not come to work you are not god. This is evil, this is pure manipulation. You are not concern about the people you are concern about your money and your business. Do not take bread from another man's table this is what you do when you ask your employees to take it or do not come to work

Government should also come out and speak up against some employer's refusing to pay their employees for sick days because they were in isolation or quarantine or some of them using their vacation as result not to pay the staff for sick days

There are parent who have to stay home because there is no one to look after their children how can the government assist. Some employer's do not care

Health workers should patrol the supermarkets and stores to make sure people are following the health protocols

We are tired of this hatred between vaccinated and unvaccinated we need laws put in place to protect those who do not want to take the vaccine. Let this be a choice and not by force. This is their Right one mart need to stop this nonsense. This is democracy. I am freedom speaker if we do not act now. Things are going to get worst do not be so manipulative forcing your workers to take the vaccine at their own risk. Before it was no mask no services now it is no vaccine no services or work. Are you kidding me. How did we get here.

Everybody work together. Follow all health protocols, boost your immune system and if you made up your mind to take the vaccine go ahead but do your research

The difference is that the USVI took a different strategy. It learned to manage the disease by making adjustments to live life with it. By doing that, the economy remained active, while health services learned much about Covid’s demands. By contrast, the BVI closed the door on Covid. Initially people cooperated, but then reverted to old habits, with many others rejecting vaccination. Sadly this now leaves BVI health services battling to not be overwhelmed.

Do you think the USVI is testing at the same rate as the VI is currently testing? Testing in the US has significant decreased. Therefore, cases aren’t being identified. Similarly to when we were essentially only testing those entering and leaving the territory and those who felt ill. We were missing huge chunks of the population who were asymptomatic. We have now tested over 5,000 in just two weeks time which has surely brought to light how many are really walking around with this virus unknowingly.

Take a look for yourselves as to whether testing rates have changed in the US VIs. As of today. 134,079 tests in the USVI. As of 6/25 (so about 2 weeks ago), 128,409 tests. See https://www.covid19usvi.com/covid19-report. So, in the last two weeks the USVI has conducted 5,670 tests or about 400 a day. At the beginning of June, 116,008 tests had been conducted, so 12,401 tests carried in June. About 12,874 tests were collected in May, and about 17,000 in April (positive rate of , and 37,000 in March. So, you would be correct in saying that testing has decreased somewhat but certainly not significantly but then again positive rates in the USVI have dropped from 5.5% at the beginning of March to 3% this month. But there is plenty of easy and freely availabie tests. And, plenty of flights full of visitors.
        • knowledge (12/07/2021, 10:42) Like (1) Dislike (0) Reply
You are correct in that less testing currently occurs in the USVI than in the BVI. However, if the positivity rate in the USVI is presently out of control, it would be reflected in the number of hospitalisations and deaths.

As far as I concern get other medical to handle the test, i am sure majority of these tests are getting contaminated from the set of medical staff who positive from the emergency area. I’m sure as well all these cases we having not everyone have the symptoms or no symptoms at all.
We don’t have no delta variant, we have people who don’t care about anything nor the the people of the Virgin Islands, ok fine you don’t wanna get vaccinated we get it. But I feel we need a new medical team to handle these testing, I don’t think we can trust the staff who doing the testing, there is a contamination leak somewhere that needs to be sorted out. Get the rapid antigen tests so we can get better and more accurate results on spot !

Undoubtedly, the BVI is in a crisis situation; it is in the throes of a public health and safety crisis. Crisis situations demand quick, bold, and effective actions. In a crisis, leaders must be bold though not reckless, making smart decisions for the greater and public good.

As such, though a lockdown may be unpopular, controversial, entails some hardships/pains and a difficult decision that cannot be made lightly, it needs to be strongly considered in this situation. Through some bold challenging and controversial actions, the territory was recognized for its managing of the pandemic and earned some priceless COVID dividends in the early stages of the pandemic. However, this spike has erased those hard earned dividends.

The BVI is backed to a square 1 situation ( Quadrant 1–urgent and important situation). Consequently, it must reach into its tool box and grab the tool that it used and worked in the recent past. Locking down, perhaps, will buy some time to identify the source(s) of the change/spike, regain control of situation, establish stability, develop and plot courses of action to arrest problem. It must make the most probable decision that benefit the most people and that is in the best short-and long-term interest of the BVI. This is an all hands action item; all hands must get on deck and get it done. It is not a time for prima donnas or us against them battles. All VI residents must jump aboard and row in unison. Social distance, mask up, avoid large gatherings, stay in protective bubbles, isolate, quarantine, get the jab……etc.

Getting the jab is a personal choice. Nonetheless, declining to take it comes with some perils for the individual, family members, friends, co-workers, congregation members and the community in general. Of note, is that the BVI has one main hospital—-Dr. D. Orlando Smith Hospital. Consequently, overwhelming the Dr. D. Orlando Smith Hospital can be problematic and nightmarish, placing medical professionals perhaps in an unenviable position. This can be avoided with preventative……actions.

It has become evident that the territory has been overwhelmed by the virus. Medical professionals seem to be in a state of panic as we watch things turn into an Irma situation. The we vs them mentality has affected the situation as much as the virus. This country was programmed to self destruct and now all we can do is pick up the pieces. Hope those who survive will turn from their evil ways and live for the benefit of humanity. All about wining, wukking up, smoking, drinking and indulging in every vice imaginable is not the way of life.

We’ve tested thousands of people in just two weeks. It’s simple Math that an increase in testing will result in identification of more positive cases. This is to be expected and more cases will be identified in the days/weeks to come until it levels off and begin to decrease.

...than using your fingers... it doesn't change the infection rate, only hides it if you don't test, you must be a sceptic ex-pat

to be honest. I don't think this is spreading now as people think. I think it's already in the community. it's just now being discovered because of testing. many people already have it and don't know anything

Yes we took vaccines when we were children. Then they used specimen from the disease or virus to develop the antiviral product. With this covid 19 ,so-called scientists, and rich pharmaceutical companies tried rushing to develop their roduct that have to be experimented. It may work for you and not for me or vise versa. So just let who want to deal, deal, just reinforce the protocols we started with;while you put penalties on those who dont take heed.
Remember that you cant force it on anyone, regardless to what you may think.
And , bytheway, let the people know that we should have a grand Revival this Season and not be thinking on a grand Festival..
