“11 to 2, we never wavered!” - Dr. Pickering
Speaking at a rally in the 6th District on October 27, 2011, Hon. Pickering said even though their mettle was tested they, as doctors, were accustomed to working under pressure and overtime and never lost hope that the party would rise again. He said a friend even told him that the NDP was dead and would never come back. “I simply smiled and told him the NDP would win the next elections and he said Doc you are a man I like but you losing it,” Dr. Pickering said as the crowd roared with laughter.
“But it was just another test and that the people saw it for themselves including in the House of Assembly where the NDP was outnumbered 11-2 and we never wavered. We showed up for work every single time and we showed up prepared to work. But we didn’t stop there. We went our way quietly trying to rebuild our organisation even when some of our hardcore members were faltering and taking breaks that went on for a long time we hung in there and we kept working. We never faltered, we never wavered, we kept working,” Dr. Pickering said.
The 7th District representative, who said his sole purpose at the rally was to give his support to fellow candidate Alvera Maduro-Caines, recalled writing in his diary some years ago that the NDP was knocked down but it wasn’t knocked out. “You see the results for yourself. We put a team together. I want you to understand, a team.”
According to him, a team means a group of people working together for a common purpose and that Alvera Maduro-Caines represented a member of a team. “Don’t mind the noise about she being young and she new and all of that, she is a member of a team and a team works together for a common purpose. And that common purpose is to advance the cause of the British Virgin Islands for you and for me and for our children.”
