DUFF'S BOTTOM, Tortola, VI – Youth Parliamentarians in the Virgin Islands Youth Parliament (VIYP) will debate the topic, “Should the Virgin Islands move to self-determination?” when the VIYP holds its first Sitting for 2021 this afternoon, Thursday, March 11, 2021, at the Save the Seed Energy Centre in Duff’s Bottom, Tortola.

With the sitting scheduled to start at 5:00 pm, it is expected to mirror the regular Virgin Islands (VI) House of Assembly (HoA) with opening speeches from the VIYP Speaker as well as the Shadow Premier, Kevin S. Fahie and Opposition Leader, Kevon S. Lettsome.

VIYP Management Committee Chairman and HoA House Speaker, Honourable Julian Willock in January statements said a lot of work, including work from an appointed secretariat, has gone into strengthening the re-launched Youth Parliament to mirror the values of the House of Assembly (HoA).

“For the next two years, we will have a group of young people, not only supported by the management committee of elected members, but a strong and knowledgeable secretariat..." Hon Willock said.

"So by the end of the current Youth Parliament cycle, they will help to ensure we have young parliamentarians well versed in the rules of the House of Assembly, how parliamentary democracy functions, public speaking, debating and the ability to contribute meaningfully to the values of our democracy,” the Speaker remarked.

The Virgin Islands Youth Parliament is comprised of 23 young people from all districts ranging from the ages of 18 to 35. The nominees are selected from other youth organisations, churches and nonprofit organisations.

The opening event is expected to be streamed live on the HoA Youtube page, where other youths and persons in the territory can watch the debate as it happens.

Research is key in helping to form an opinion. How much of that is done nowadays. One cannot just listen to the news and talk about a subject.
