FAT HOGS BAY, Tortola, VI – Host of ‘Da Morning Braff’ radio show Floyd Burnett aka 'Heritage' has called out the Virgin Islands public for having what he called a ‘negative’ mindset towards youths who use scooters, while highlighting the need for bikes on the territory's roadways.

“Pedestrians, nuff [Plenty] of you have a negative mindset towards the transportation of choice towards the younger generation," he said during the show on March 22, 2022.

“And the reality is if all these youths have cars, me and you won’t have room to drive,” he added.

Death of Keaundre Burke

Burnett’s conversation centered around a scooter collision with a police vehicle on March 21, 2022, resulting in the death of a young man.

The dead man was identified as Lower Estate resident Keaundre Burke, according to information released by the Royal Virgin Islands Police (RVIPF) on March 22, 2022.

Videos shared with Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) had reportedly shown an individual lying facedown on the road and a damaged scooter a short distance away along with a pickup belonging to the RVIPF on the scene.

The accident, while still being investigated, is now the latest in a series of scooter accidents, sparking more social media outcries by residents of the VI for such bikes to be banned.

However, according to Mr Burnett, scooters are needed in the VI should the population continue to increase.

More scooters needed - Burnett

“For this traffic and our population to continue to grow, just like China, Japan, any population… we are going to have to incorporate mopeds… scooters, motorbikes all these other things becoming a viable part of our transportation. ”

On June 4, 2020, the VI government implemented a 3-week scooter ban and this was extended for a further 3 weeks as a result of increased scooter accidents and complaints of noise nuisance.

Premier Andrew A. Fahie (R1), in a statement on June 24, 2020, said, “We are seeing an increase in scooter accidents, and riders are not wearing safety gears and riding safely on the road. I am urging scooter riders to practice safety on the Territory’s roads.”

You can buy a cheap car for the same price. There is absolutely no need for more scooters and no need for more premature deaths. This man smoking too much.

for the first time ever; Jones actually admitted that the scooter riders are reckless. But hay it’s talking season so the uncomfortable social issues that she never acknowledge will all of a sudden be acknowledge while hiding behind an agenda 021.

Now here comes the minions that says they never read VINO news saying how i make a whole comment about them god; on a subject that’s not about she? Well my people. That’s just how the cookie crumbles .

Look I don’t agree with most of Heritage views but he may have a point. Our traffic problems are due to the large number of vehicles on infrastructure that was not designed for a population of more than 10,000 people. It’s not only about cost saving but can you imagine another 10,000 vehicles on these same roadways. There is not more we can do to town to widen roads and everybody wants to drive their own vehicles.

Lol there must be a lot of idiots on here for this to receive so many likes. “You can buy a cheap car for same price.” Eh? That’s an idiotic statement in itself to be used as a solution. It’s beyond OBVIOUS that there are too many cars on the island. His suggestion is pretty much infinitely more sensible than the idiotic statement you made. Public transportation is what needs fixing and improving.

I don’t agree with more scooters, until they can fix the existing problems. Maybe one day the Government will grow a brain, or someone with one will enter Politics.

But he failed to use his platform to urge these young riders to practice safety and eliminate their reckless behavior. No accountability on the youths' part. This dude is just an antagonist and anarchist. Hold the youths accountable for their reckless behavior that are the genesis of these conversations you are referring to.

He actually did speak about the youths riding dangerously and also state that he often speaks to the young men around him and urge them to ride in a safe manner. Watch the live from which the excerpt was taken.

Just don't encourage them to own a bike..encourage than to have there documents at hand to present to the police when they are stop..have them comprehend the laws of the bvi to license, insured and wear a helmet and don't ride away from the police..have you not know that a bike is more dangerous than using a vehicle.have you not notice in the bvi no one uses indicator which are dangerous..

Young man, are you suggesting that in spite of the irrisponsi like behavior of young scooter and motor cycle riders in the BVI, particular over the last 15 yrs, that more bikers is needed to help reduce transportation cost? You see this as good use of common sense, I see it as pure ignorance, and lack of good judgment.

I agree with Heritage. Scooters are not the problem..The problems are reckless and careless riders supported by lack of, or very little law enforcement..Ive been to Santo Domingo where the #1 means of transport is either motor bike or scooters..they have tons of them and they are very effect in getting u around safely, What I realized is that the riders are very good and responsible..I will suggest.Get Scooter riders tested as good and responsible riders that knows traffic rules and traffic signs and upon passing they be given a scooter operating licence..All scooters/motor bike riders using our public Roads must be licence to do so..

The issue is not scooters, but the lawlessness! There are rules and no one enforces them. Somebody is related to somebody so the turn the other way, not only with this issue, but everything!
Sad times, only to get worse.

It has more car accidents then scooter accidents they are just not getting reported as much. The scooter accidents are mostly deadly I see scooter drivers and vehicle drivers drive careless also and doing very dumb moves to keep other people kill like passing at corners which I see often. Rider don't think about how fast car are traveling when they want to do a quick move because at just glimpse in the mirror and turn their head a boom the car can be close as they turn back so things happens fast on scooters so you never know even with the holes in the road also could play a part digging them along on a bike whick is a piece of a car. Vehicle shouldn't be allowed to drive close to a scooter drivers they are supposed to have enough distance also which is the law but it doesn't happens that way

Mr Floyd, I commend you for Tola Radio and your good works. I am a supporter.

Being a pendant though, I mention that China and Japan were not the best examples of countries with population growth. Japan's population has been declining since 2008 and experts say China's population will start to decline during this decade; possibly as soon as this year.

I do think Virgin Islands population will continue to grow for the foreseeable as it remains a magnet for migrants. I don't know about whether it would otherwise have natural growth; I doubt it.

Nigeria and Niger would be better examples of countries with population growth; as their populations continue to explode.

How even is this ignoramus even relevant in any way at all? Maybe if he stopped smoking weed for a couple of years his brain cells may recover. Maybe not.
