ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Doctors at Peebles Hospital who examined 11 year-old T’Shonda Dore yesterday August 12, 2015 confirm that they can do nothing for her save prescribe painkillers to ease the pain from her spinal curvature.

Speaking to this news site today August 13, 2015, the girl’s mother Shennel Dore said that they spent the entire day at the hospital only to be given the grim reminder of how critical the need for the surgery to be done urgently is.

“All they can do is give her medication for the pain. She has to do the surgery as soon as possible because the scoliosis is causing her [pain],” said mother of the child Shennel Dore.

According to the mother, it might be necessary to push back the date of the surgery scheduled for next week in Puerto Rico, since they are still far away from the required funds of $65,000.

She said however that a decision will be made very soon on the pushing back of the surgery date, noting that it cannot be pushed too far back seeing that it is critically urgent.

She noted that since the publication of the first article yesterday, one person who wished to remain anonymous has made a donation to the family. She however thanked all those persons who over the past months have donated to the child’s medical expense.

Dore is still hoping that the Government steps in and provide some measure of urgent assistance towards the cost of the child’s surgery.

See previous article published on August 12, 2015:

11-year-old needs emergency back surgery

- T’Shonda Dore suffers from scoliosis which threatens to damage one of her lungs if surgery is not done soon

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – When this article was being written today August 12, 2015, 11-year-old T’Shonda Dore was in the Emergency Room of Peebles Hospital waiting to see yet another doctor to examine her back.

She suffers from scoliosis and needs urgent back surgery as the curve in her spine is putting pressure on one of her lungs.

According to her parents, they need urgently the sum of $65,000 for surgery at a hospital in Puerto Rico but so far, despite fundraisers and donations from kind persons, they are nowhere close to that amount.

Speaking to this news site today, her mother Shennel Dore said the family has some money but not nearly enough to pay for the surgery scheduled for Puerto Rico next week.

“They are waiting for a next doctor to come and look at her,” her mother said. “We are supposed to be doing the surgery next week but we didn’t come up with the money and that is the problem. We have had no positive answer from anybody saying that we are going to get the money. All we have is what we raised but we are still far from $65,000. We haven’t even reached $20,000 as yet,” she said.

Her stepfather Alvin J. Dore is hoping that Government comes forward and give assistance.

“We already went to Puerto Rico for the check up and the MRI but the problem is to get the money for the operation. So we are trying to go to all of the Government people and others to try to see whether we get any funds,” said Alvin J. Dore.

He said the family was able to do some fundraisers and got some donations from different people. “I would really like to thank people. We got some money but it ain’t nothing big. But we really need it because [her problem] is getting worse,” he said.

“Last night we were at the hospital for hours. They just went back,” he said.

According to the stepfather, the doctors in Puerto Rice warned that if the surgery is not performed soon the curved spine could lead to a lung being burst because of the pressure being put on it.

We will continue to bring you updates on the progress the family is making to raise the needed funds for the surgery.

Persons wishing to donate can reach the parents Shennel Dore at 341-5009 or Alvin J. Dore at 343-2767.

Contact Shriners' Crippled Childrens' Hospital in Boston, Mass. by having a Doctor here make the call...They do surgery for free and handle the travel costs and all expenses to do with the procedure. They are totally sincere and very professional and the best..and they have several locations on the East Coast...this is important.thank you.

In an article some months ago, people were asking the parents to try Shriners by going thru MCH. Don't know if they tried and if they did what happened. Sometimes we feel so dependent on the doctor whose desk we sit at that we think our problem is unique and no other doctor can help. Hope the parents look into it if they didn't because sympathy can't pay for this. All you will get here is sympathy because most people don't like give their money to worthy causes.

They have a facility in Tampa, Florida as well. There is a simple form to be completed for non-US residents. The parents need to review this option ASAP as coming up with $65k is not easy.

I see that the mothers in the BVI are following the pattern of the African American mothers and giving their kids names that are very ethnic, these names in the US are creating a big problem for the African American communities as it relatives to employment opportunities for young men and women with these names. There are many articles etc written about this, where HR managers will not consider someone with an " ethnic sounding name" employment opportunity no matter how qualified they are. This of course is all on based racism. Care must be taken when choosing a name for a child in today's would if you want them to succeed in life.

I totally agree with you on that notion. However, that little girl name is beside the point as she is facing a bigger issue with her back.

I am sure that all of us no matter where we are want to see that she gets the best medical treatment that is available so she can grow up to be a great young lady.

You're completely correct Kingfish. It is unfortunate that many in the BVI choose to name their kids various sounding African American type names like "Keshaunda" and "Dequisha" etc. Although I have no problem with the names personally, it does create a problem as the children get older and have to live their life in the real world. 20/20 and other news organizations have done reports on this, such as sending out resumes with the same qualifications only to have Anglo sounding names receive a call back. What I find even more crazy are the parents themselves with "normal" names giving their kids African American names.

Based on the like/dislike ratio above, quite a number of people were offended by your post, however, it is about the truth rather then the emotional feelings of the parents from reading your post.

@ wize up: The government is trying its best to improve its health care system but we choose not see that.
The young lady has a rare medical condition and the government does not have the specialized doctors here to deal with her case. I agree that many of us will not be able to pick up and travel outside the territory for medical assistance and that is why I support the NHI - for many persons need it very much.

Have they been referred to or approached the Government for assistance in being sent to the UK for free care? It would seem they have been referred to Puerto Rico

@ Queen: Medical in the UK is NOT free. Working people pay out of their salary every month for medical care via national insurance, which is automatically deducted like tax. It is called the NHS (National Health Service); much like the NHI being proposed for the BVI. Now even if medical care in the UK was 'free', it is highly unlikely that this young person would be eligible for it for so many reasons: not resident in the UK; long waiting lists; the NHS being under strain, just to name a few. In fact, when some specialist surgeries are required, the UK also often send people away to the US to obtain it. I am very confident that if she was to go to the UK, the parents will have to go private unless someone volunteers to do it privately at very low cost. I am praying for the family and will be making a donation. Every penny helps, so please everyone I hope you can do the same also.

Oh My Gosh! Some people does just sicken me. T'Shonda & her family are reaching out to the community for assistance in helping fund T'shonda's surgery. If you wont support her or pray for her, then stop leaving stupid comments that have nothing to do with her condition or you trying to help. Simple. She did nothing wrong and God made every one of us unique. I don't blame God for my son's 4 diseases but through prayer, he has helped us through our hard times. Please support T'Shonda and her family in this time. Im sure if it was your loved one you would be doing the same. As parents we have to do all we can for our kids. Please just be positive and if you wont help, stop talk foolishness.

They need to go to Shriners or get referred through the government to the UK for surgery. This should have been done ages ago by whichever local doctor is seeing the child rather than refer them to Puerto Rico where they cannot afford.

Please take the advice and check out Shriners. While people may sympathize with your cause some of us genuinely cannot assist because we have so much demand on our meager financial resources. We wish you all the best and our prayers are with the family at this time. I appeal to those who can contribute to please do so. Parents who have been in this situation please throw your support behind this family they will need all they can get. The rest of us please support NHI because children like T'Shonda will have full access to the services they need. This also goes for anyone who need advanced medical care.

Maaan this is so disgusting, makes me sick, A child is sick and in order to help her recover, is money, 65,000.00 and why I it they should have to be begging so hard for help. This freaky uncaring American attitude we have come to develop is very shameful. We are the BVI, a loving and caring community and it is so bad that we cannot help one of our kids. This is not us, this is not us. We take care of our kids. Milliionares and Government, this is not us. help our kids, please.

BVI residents does just type because that's ALL THEY CAN DO- hide behind posts in an online forum for a CAUSE! Does it matter what her name is? Or what her parent's occupations are? Or education level?!? WE ARE HEARTLESS! SOME OF YOU KEYBOARD TERRORISTS ARE HEARTLESS! AMDIN- Start blocking these low class people for real! Some of you may have book sense but no COMMON SENSE and that's a shame! As a MOTHER, the hardest thing for me to do is come forward and beg for help for my child- who, without me setting aside my pride, would develop other complications and possibly die. I can't imagine being in that position because this society is so backwards, desensitized and cold that I can't imagine having to read all these comments that are IRRELEVANT. Some of you only talk mess because you want attention. Well, this isn't the right attention or forum for the nonsense. Grow up and do something with yourselves so you can be happy. Only disgruntled, lazy cowards make light of serious, life altering situations because they themselves are unhappy. #DoBetterBVI

The care and price is good, Once government signed a payment agreement, that`s as good as gold....Quit doing business with Puerto Rico, They already made billions from us, but to save a life for a couple thousand, they refuse---strruuppeess.

Even though the child is from the BVI the panel needs to stop dragging their feet with the public when they are in need of urgent medical attention. This family has been trying their best to raise the funds along with other members of the community. Yes we need NHI but we don't have it at this time so help the people when they can't afford it.
