Fahie’s attorney scrutinising jury's ability to render impartial verdict
According to the Virgin Islands Daily News based in the USVI on December 14, 2023, several of the questions seek to determine whether potential jurors have formed any impressions or opinions of him.
“There are also questions about whether jurors have seen any media reports about Fahie or the case against him, and numerous other questions about the jurors’ personal background and connections to issues like law enforcement, drug trafficking, and moral beliefs that could impact their ability to render an impartial verdict,” the news source noted.
Trial in 2024
Mr Fahie, who served as the VI’s Premier between 2019 and 2022, and had been in politics since 1995, has been charged with conspiracy to import a controlled substance (cocaine), conspiracy to engage in money laundering, attempted money laundering, and foreign travel in aid of racketeering.
The voir dire questions come as a Miami court last week Wednesday, December 13, 2023, amended bail requirements for ex-Virgin Islands Premier Andrew A. Fahie, allowing his wife, Sheila E. Forbes-Fahie, to visit him for the holidays without surrendering her passport as previously required.
Mr Fahie has been largely confined to his daughter’s Miami apartment since he was released on $1M bail in June 2022 as he awaits trial in the new year 2024.
Van Vliet had asked that the court allow Fahie’s wife to keep her travel documents during her visit and said pretrial services and prosecutors do not object to the request.
